P.s.
Places have closed up, reopened as something else, closed again....you would never recognize any of the shops on Meacham Avenue. But Barney's hardware is still standing right across from Stop 20 Diner. Amazing. The mother is 1000 years old and still works every day.
Alva T. Stanforth is now the new Elmont Public Library/Theatre. Towards the racetrack they opened a Pizza Hut/KFC. Genovese drugs is now Duane Reade and Sapienza Bakery is still on the turnpike and Sapienza on Meacham where they make the bread is still there. Tiso's deli is closed. Stanley's Deli is closed. Most everything is owned by Indians.
Oh well, enough for now.
Take care.

If anyone happens to read this and knows L street well ...if you know the damaged fence on the left...I think as you are coming FROM Meacham ave on L street right before you hit Arcadian Ave... I am the one who put my parent's car into neutral on the hill and rammed that fence at about 5 years old!...The last time I visited that house it was still damaged.

For those who may not be familiar with Elmont
For those who may not be familiar with Elmont:
Once called Foster's Meadow, and home to the Belmont Race Track, Elmont is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the northwest part of the Town of Hempstead, in the west part of Nassau County, along the Nassau County/NYC (Queens County) line.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Elmont in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Bellerose Terrace, the Village of Floral Park, the Village of South Floral Park and the Village of Stewart Manor; on the east by the Hamlet of Franklin Square; on the south by the Hamlet of North Valley Stream; and, on the west by New York City (the Nassau/Queens county line).
The Hamlet of Elmont has a different border than does the "Elmont, NY 11003" postal zone (i.e., a place can have an "Elmont, NY 11003" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Elmont and a place can be in the Hamlet of Elmont and have other than an "Elmont, NY 11003" mailing address): places with an "Elmont, NY 11003" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Elmont are in the Hamlet of Franklin Square; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Elmont with a "Valley Stream, NY 11580" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County):

The new library is supposed to be beautiful, state of the art. I worked in the former one across from Home Depot. It was like the borderline, the area back behind the library and to too bad, but on the other side of the Turnpike and behind Home Depot...oh what was that road, Arcade Pl., Hendrickson Ave.? Shootings, robberies, assaults. Plus, Hemp. Tpke. was deadly over there. Folks always getting hit by cars. It was weird.
I used to live right on the FS/Elmont border, and I rarely am in that area these days. But it feels so different to me now. I live in Levittown now, hardly the country, but everything is so cramped.

I grew up in Elmont in the 60s, on Jacob St right across from Great Eastern (now Home Depot). I now live in Middle Island. I still go to Belmont Park, and sometimes drive past the old house. The street seems so narrow and kind of dirty. Despite that, I miss the old neighborhood and the good times.

I grew up in Elmont, on G Street, but I went to Valley Stream Schools.... My cousins all went to Sewanhaka, and ATS.
My brother now lives in the house I grew up in. The neighborhood has changed.... Tiso's is gone, LaGrega's Deli is gone, Stanley's, Victoria's - all gone. The only icon on Meacham Ave is Sapienza's bread factory (and the smell of the fresh bread being baked).
I miss Elmont the way it used to be. It was a family-oriented town with lots of kids playing anything from stickball to kickball on almost every street in the summers.
I now live in Levittown and really miss the "old" Elmont...
Some things to remember:
Gouz, Great Eastern Mills, TSS, Westgate Candy Store (used to have great fountain drinks), Meacham Pizza, Coco's (Franklin Ave), The Chicken Market (where Umberto's is - on Meacham side), that old scary Munsters looking house that used to be where that shopping center is on the west side of Meacham - at the end of Meacham & Hemp. Tpke), Pinball Fever.... just to name a few.....

I forgot to add Argo Lanes, Franklin Bowl... and does anyone remember that HUGE jeans place that was on Franklin Ave in the 70's? They sold a million different kinds of jeans... it was a brick building on the west side of Franklin Ave just before Hemp. Tpke. What was the name of that place?? OH! And National Shoes.... Arthur Treacher's.... I could go on & on.... LOL
