NYS School Aid Cuts by District (LI)
I made this in excel the other day to see how each district's reserves will be affected by Gov. Cuomo's proposed cuts in School aid. Excel data does not paste over very friendly to C-D's text box but I thought I'd post it anyway. "New reserve %" is the most critical data point. Generally, a 1%-4% "Reserve to Budget" % ratio is ideal and considered safe for a district. 1% is bare-bones. These cuts are going to wipe out half of the districts' reserves and send many into the red for this years budget.

Who does the math in figuring this out? Or is someone using a blindfold and a dartboard? This is silly and no way proportional to each district.
How does Sachem as the 2nd biggest district lose $16 million of a $280 million budget and Smithtown lose $5 million on a $202 million budget?

Generally, a 1%-4% "Reserve to Budget" % ratio is ideal and considered safe for a district. 1% is bare-bones. These cuts are going to wipe out half of the districts' reserves and send many into the red for this years budget.

It's because some districts are receiving as high as 30%-40% in aid, while others only receive 5%-15%. So the more a district is getting in aid, the more it loses.

Seriously thank you.
If youre feeling feisty it would be an interesting Xsection to see this vs HHI from 2000 and now.
The way we do this is nuts.

I'll take a look at HHI. Good point though, you said it in another post -- "Albany still thinks our homes are ATMs".
The aid seems to be working especially in Suffolk. They didnt even look at performance - Sachem N & East both looking up vs 2-3 years ago. The newest report cards ( 2010 (https://www.nystart.gov/publicweb/Home.do?year=2010 - broken link)) were just published this week.

even middle country & RP looking up. Truth be told, this is going to do a number on Suffolk schools and some of Nassau. There's no telling what these cuts in aid are going to do, but asking an SD to pull $20 Mil out of its A$$ ain't gonna be pretty. Cutting a few classes won't even put a dent in the shortfall.

Time to cut teacher and administrator salary and pensions. What they get paid out here is insane.

I dont have kids in Sachem but have friends that do. Last year the budget was voted in because of the fear of cancelling clubs etc.
Well, amazing this year the clubs have been dropped from about 20 to 4. So even though the budget passed on this basis, the clubs were still cut.
