Pure ignorance at it's best . Maybe this was true 250 years ago. Let me enlighten you it's no longer the case
It depends on where you go and what circles you travel in. I don't think it's shoved down your throat, but it is always in the background. Especially the more rural areas that I have been to. Weird story, I just got a check from a family member that moved to South Carolina, her check said "Through God's work all things are possible." She moved down there four years ago and didn't attend church since she was 12 on Long Island. Goes every weekend now!!!
Heck, I didn't know you could get cool little sayings printed on your checks. My check is going to say " A Product of Staples Photo Copy Center."
Taxes are going to go up in Nassau, big time, and in the not so distant future.
I've heard some things through the political grapevine.
Stock up on the vasoline now.

It's really a lot worse than people think in some parts of the south.
There is defintely more religion "out in the open" down here than there is in NY. For instance, the local paper lists houses of worship and the times of services. I listen to a regular Top 40 station and they play Christian themed music pop music on Sunday morning. People talk about their religion a lot more freely down here - it's not a deep dark secret if you're a religious person (we moved from Garden City, though, so this isn't a huge change for me, just about everyone there is Christian and you'll see everyone you know at church). Someone might say something like "so my pastor gave a really good sermon the other day..." I don't find that "in your face" but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. You'll notice if you're out on a Sunday morning that around 11 a.m. the stores get really crowded with people dressed in their Sunday best, just coming from church. Reminds me of when I was a kid and we always had to dress up and then run errands when we got set free.
So yes - if you are atheist, I can see where you might be uncomfortable. But if you are a Christian who went to church regularly till you were 12 and you've started going again, I'm not really sure what's wrong with that??? If she did that still living on Long Island would there be an issue??? There seems to be a weird tipping point where it's like being Christian living in the south is being equated with being a devil worshipper, LOL.
If you aren't offended by organized religion, you won't really care at all. IF you have a HUGE problem with organized religion you probably wouldn't like it (usually these are raging liberals who think they are so open-minded, which always makes me laugh!)
And BTW there is a synagogue around the corner from my Catholic parish

I'm not sure what that means, I'd like to hear more info as well. Nassau has problems, but what county is any different? NYC is in much worse shape even with huge tax increases factored into their '12 budget and Suffolk's not far behind.
They(Nassau gov) are prepping for a county(not school)tax increase.
