The library is wonderful- it is the teaching library for NYS.
I also agree with you Kelly, that the area of Coram that the other poster was talking about is not the same as this area.
Don't get me wrong, Middle Country IS right in the middle of the school district ratings. I'm not trying to say that it is top rated or anything like that. In my experience the teachers have been wonderful and my kids are doing really well. I really like it here.
Yes, Coram has it's "bad" areas, as we all know, and the traffic on Middle Country Road is horrible, as is ALL traffic on LI.
So my advice is to get a good Realtor and do your own research and you should be fine.
I had a fantastic childhood there, you made a great choice!

I had a fantastic childhood in Patchogue

That was many unkind years ago.

I respectfully disagree

Centereach is still a nice area to live. It probably will be for years to come also. The only bad part is the traffic on middle country.

I think Centereach is nice, the library as stated is the best, the schools are great for the money, You can really do a lot worse for the same amount of money. It is a hard working community. Only drawback is the traffic.

If you say so pal.

Middle Counttry rd is a debacle.

Schools are mediocre.

I guess its nicer that Selden but that aint saying much.

As for "years to come".
I have serious concerns about the long term prospects for the middle of LI.

Its subjective ...but no thanks

Clammy ~~~ no, I think you're right. The middle of the island is just not the same. It is almost as if it is not really part of the island at all. Probably, it is because there were no long ago settlers that built lovely little villages ( from Babylon to Northport & Cold Spring Harbor , Huntington, Roslyn , Sag Harbor and Sayville). These places all have churches and homes dating from the 1700s and before. Later , wealthy land barons came and built huge estates in places like Port Washington and Brookville . So little villages grew up around the estates. The villages, for the most part, have remained intact .

The middle of the island had none of that history and was always just tract housing for people who worked in the city. Treeless and characterless. No one ever thought to make it pretty at all. And, thank you Robert Moses for your LIE which destroyed all hope of any beauty to that part of the island (it was certainly not his part of the island . He lived in Babylon on Thompson Street).

Spend 10 minutes on Rt. 25 between Centereach and Selden and you'll know why.

Its everything wrong with Long Island in 5 painful miles.

It's like living off Queens Blvd. Lovely traffic, sirens, etc. Then there is the fact that they don't PLOW Rt. 25 when it snows. Even in the Home Depo/King Kullen parking they don't plow. Great trying to push a shopping cart in the parking lot of frozen, packed snow.

I hated the area.

Clamboy sorry you had such a bad experience growing up.

It's not nostagia to me since I am still happy living here.

I would definitely recommend my area in NORTH CORAM.
