Can you imagine what this place would be like if there WASN'T NYC to commute to?
I can't, but I'm absolutely positive it would be awful!
NYC isn't completely bulletproof. It's declined before, it can decline again. In the 60s-70s when NYC's economy fell apart, Long Island had tons of it's own jobs... if that same thing happened today it would be really ugly.
It's not just the commuters that are supported by the city either... think about how many businesses and people on LI supply, are supplied by or do work for companies in Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, etc. What happens if that dries up??

Exactly. We lost a lot of our national business' because our Dear Leaders decided tax and spend would be a better method of job creation then making business friendly decisions. Personally, once Grumman left it was the begining of the end for national business' on LI. Too high a cost for the same results.
well I've been working from home for 7+ years now, for a major corporation. They didn't want to renew their lease in the building... TOO EXPENSIVE. There ya go.
I had heard 500 people are being laid off from that company (the name escapes me in huapauge off vets) and 1000 teachers are going, and i know of many businesses that went under...
So i think that #9 may be correct or off a little...
Only problem with this is the LIRR has got you by the cajones - the fares are beyond ridiculous and with current oil prices, driving is not any cheaper when you factor maintenance and insurance.

The bus is more extensive that ya realize and should be better molded into ppl's lives.
