Default Buy nice house in Plainview-Old bethpage schools or buy a....

modest house in Syosset school district. I am inclined towards POB , but I appreciate the knowledge in this forum as I've been longtime lurker here so I want to weigh all variables. Normally for me the POB school/house combo would be a slam dunk towards which I still lean.. However, the txes in POB are still high , just slightly less than Syosset. So under this scenario what would you do and why. Thanks for your time!

I'd go w/Syosset, but that's because I like the north shore.

where do you want to be?
I guess for me it would come down to what sort of numbers and houses we're talking bout here. if you're buying one of the nicest in the POB district that is HUGE, then maybe its a bad investment. If the Syosset house is small and the difference in size is a big diff, then maybe thats not the answer.

your kids will get a good education in either. syosset maybe more-so. same with resale value.

I purchjased in Wantagh which I think is on the same price ranges as plainview old bethpage. at the 400-500 mark, staying at that level makes a lot of sense. if you're in the 700-800k range looking on the north shore makes a lot of sense. between those.....? idunno

Being a good parent is hard work and takes dedication. Buying an overpriced house in a good school district and letting the teachers take care of the kids is easier. Long Islanders with their endless open check budget passes have been brainwashed into thinking good schools are the answer to everything.

what’s funny is that parents are so motivated to have “successful” kids, they have forgotten that raising your kid to care about people, have a sense of humor, a good attitude and great work ethic costs nothing.
These well-adjusted kids will have a much happier life than the over achieving, over ambitious alpha-dogs caught in the rat race of keeping up with the Jones’.
You realize that either place you chose, you will be surrounding yourself and children with the very types you've knocked?

We had the exact same thought process and decision to make...we chose POB because of the selection of houses in our price range at the time that we liked and we knew that POB was a great district as well...

Hubby and I bid on a home in syosset (we were highest bid) and at the last minute changed our mind. we ended up purchasing a bigger home in old bethpage for 8K more than the syosset home.

Both houses were in similar condition, but Old bethpage home is bigger, and a much better neighborhood (quiet, no schools around, more trees, more suburban feel) taxes were the same on both properties.

the reason we did this, was because the syosset home was in a busier area and it was a cape VS. a split that we are in now. We were so set on living in syosset and having our kids in that school district we weren't looking at the overall picture.

Once in a blue moon, I wonder if we made the right decision but It's really on hubby and I to make sure the kiddies do well in school

Good Luck!
just wanted to add that we really do love this area , so peaceful and quiet, we feel lucky to be here

same 2 towns when it came time for us late last year. We chose Plainview because Syosset's stock was not that great for similar pricing (we were willing to pay more because of the schools, but didn't like what we saw). Plainview's scenery is nicer anyway.

What area of POB is it? I was under the impression that POB was a pretty big area extending all the way from 135 east to round swamp road?.....
