Most charge between $1,000 - $1,500; a few just under $1,000--they make most of their money on short sales and can afford to be on the low side for regular deals.
Just make sure real estate is their primary focus!

One thing to keep in mind is that being a real estate attorney is a high volume, low margin business. And most of the actual work is usually performed by a paralegal. Find out who is on the attorney's staff will actually be handling your file on a day to day basis. In my opinion the competence of that person is more important than that of the attorney.

Thanks everyone...someone on his staff is actually handling most of the transaction -- I'm more comfortable with that to be honest, since we're disclosing a bit of personal financial info. But his office mainly deals with RE, and so far they've been doing a great job (very tricky negotiations heading into contract this week). You're right, trust is paramount in these situations.

sounds high... we've been using the same lawyer for years in the family and he's basically been passed down the line... his normal rate is $1200 and he will take care of everything and hold your hand. Recently our family hired a cheaper one to handle an estate sale at $800 and man... you get what you pay for... they basically tossed papers at us without explaining. We did more legwork than they did as far as getting the correct documents. Even the sale price on the drawn contract was inaccurate - they went by the rider instead of what we actually wrote down in black and white after agreeing with the buyers. The rider was just an attachment that wasn't final - I mean, how do you grab an attachment without reading the 1st sentence of the original email with it? Just a whole lot of incompetence on a simple cash-only sale. Never again.
