I'm a single female in my 30's and I'm really having an issue trying to figure out where to move to - I'm wondering if anyone could offer some tips & advice? I've lived in nyc for 10 years (5 yrs in Manhattan & 5 yrs in Astoria, Queens), and I want to move someplace nicer. I'm sick of walking out of my apartment and seeing garbage bags and crappy concrete buildings everywhere I walk. Here's what I'm looking for: trees, grass, friendly people, a walkable town with cute shops & cafes, a jogging trail, and an easy commute to nyc.
I've spent a lot of time looking and still can't excited about any one place. Part of my family lives in Cold Spring Harbor and I like hanging out with them so the north shore of LI is particularly attractive.
-I like Huntington but an hour commute to nyc? No can do. Also I don't have a car.
-Great Neck is an awesome commute but I can't find a jogging trail - what do people do for running, can you run around the neighborhoods? Will Great Neck have young friendly people or is it all serious families? I love people, especially fun friendly people, and want to live someplace with a pulse. Great Neck just feels so... sleepy. But it's my best bet (esp. given the plethora of apartments).
Are there any neighborhoods in Queens I've missed that are really nice? I've been to Forest Hills and Bayside, and while they're ok, they are just ok. Floral Park, not bad I guess. Maybe I'm being too picky, I dunno. I guess I'm just frustrated that I can't find everything I want all in one town, when all I want is the same basic things that most everyone wants. Why is this so hard to find?
I feel like I have to make this trade-off of either living someplace nice but without fun people, or living amongst fun people but in a not-so-safe neighborhood.
Great Neck, it almost borders Queens with full of rich people...very safe...and you can take LIRR to city, 30 mins? may be even less, great neck LIRR station is a main hub, all the buses, and trains go through it. Plenty of apartments walking distance. Shopping, small stores, etc all walking distance, there is a busy street there with full of stores.
By the way, I have seen many young couples in great neck, but not sure about singles. I don't know when I used to be single, I wanted to get away from the city, I didn't care about fun people. If you want to stay in queens, whitestone could be good too. Lots of places for rent there. But once you are married and especially have kids, you don't fun people.. you want nice, safe... no cars .. like on my block, lots of kids playing basketball right on the street, ... try doing that in queens...
You didn't state your budget, so I won't take cost into consideration.
How about Port Washington? LIRR is right there with a short commute (no Jamaica!!) and plenty of stores, etc., etc.

Any tips or advice for me?
Thanks
Bay Terrace. You have the park by Fort Totten (if you've ever driven on the Cross Island Parkway you see the trail by the Bayside Marina). You have everything you need and can get a dollar cab ride to the Bayside LIRR...30 min to Penn. You say you've been to Bayside, which Bay Terrace is technically a part of...but it's by far the nicest part of Bayside. Frankly, I don't know how Bayside can go as far south as it does, when really only Bay Terrace and the Gables are near the water.

Reason: said "north", meant to say "south"
Great Neck. If you're young and single, you can't put a price on the ability to stumble home from the LIRR station after a late happy hour in Manhattan.
Brentwood. I hear theres going to be a Utopian Society built there.
In all seriousness though your going to be stuck somewhere off the LIRR routes in Nassau. Check the areas around the trains (especially north shore areas) for your price.
You can live in great neck without a car. Everything you need is around that LIRR station. That is why rent/ownership comes with a premium.
The area around the LIRR station is in Great Neck Plaza, not Great Neck.
