Illegal Renting in Suburbia
Nothing makes me more upset than someone who rents out their basement or upstairs. The effect is to turn sububia into another borough of the city. If people want two and three family homes they should buy a place in Brooklyn or Queens. The problem is that the people who do this don't give a @#$% about the impact they are having on the neighborhood. They are just selfish.
How do other folk on Long Island feel about this?

I hate it, but desparate people do desparate things.
People cant afford their taxes.
As for sc@mB4g absentee landlords.
They should either be shot on sight...or taxed at a hotel rate.

Being an outsider to island I've never been comfortable with it, but everyone I know does it!

Blame your politicians who only want wealthy people to live on Long Island. There is no AFFORDABLE housing for the average person. Not everyone renting their basement is a scumlord. Not all renters LIKE the situation, either.

If renting is to be done, then make it legal and pay your FAIR share of taxes. It is now commercial property, and should be taxed as such. Illegal apartments should be heavily fined with at least a $10,000 fine IMHO

I am not a fan of it. It adds to congestion on roads, parking and in the schools. Sure I understand why people do it, and those people must understand in return why someone would not be ok with that.
Fopt65 makes a good point about the property should then be in a different tax status.

People need places to live. They're going to find them, regardless of what "quality of life" fantasies the local yokels dream up in what they use for brains.
Goodbye industry, because of rich whiny NIMBY's. Goodbye tax base. Hello, exorbitant taxes.
By the way, two plus two equals four, also.

When I first started looking in LI, I could not, for the life of me, find a regular house with 2 stories. Every single house had the upstairs converted into an "apartment". I'd never seen anything like it anywhere else.

The number of illegal rentals is just another sign pointing to the decline and fall of suburban Long Island.
