Has it been that bad on the South Shore during the hurricane season? I have family that live there (south of Merrick) and never heard much of anything from them about the "weather".

The sad part of the evacuation story is not that there are insufficient shelters. It's that only a small percentage of people will actually leave when told to evacuate (historically, about 20 percent.) Those people who don't leave will be calling for help when the water's lapping at their front door and the trees are bent over sideways. And at that point, there won't be anyone to help.

I'd hope that after seeing what happened in Katrina, people will get the hell out. Who knows, maybe before Katrina, I would have thought, "eh, I can wait this out". But I will be jumping the gun to get off the island if it looks like a hurricane is going to hit. Long Island is so congested that it will be an absolute nightmare if there are thousands of people stuck here with no electricity/water/gas/food, etc.

hmmmm...is LIPA behind all the hurricane hype? LIPA = LILCO, right? Is it possible they are hyping it up to push for rate increases for upgrades?

Based on what we went through here in VA and what I saw in NC when hurricane Isabel hit 9 days could be about right.

It sure would be an improvement (albeit, slight!) I lived in Mt. Sinai when Gloria hit LI...took 11 days to get my power back on. Relatively speaking...9 seems better!

If I remember right we didn't lose power for very long on Clark Street. There were a bunch of houses out on Bond Street but all they needed was the transformer to be reset. It did take several days to find someone to do that.

Is LIPA still LILCO? I remember when I left back in '88...people were looking to crucify that CEO (Catacosinos?) for the salary and golden parachute he was pulling down!
