When I read the queston, I was surprised at the answers.. I see all races all around all the time.. I would'nt think it would be an issue anywhere... Just pick where you like and I am sure it will all work out... LI is really a full spectrum of races...

It does not matter if you are purple and green if you are decent people. Take care of your house . people are pretty accepting. I am not saying there are not some aholes but anyone could have problems with them.I live in a nice nieghborhood and I would guarantee you. know one would treat you different. expecially if your kids are good at sports LOL only kidding. and yes are neighborhood is predominantly white but we do have black, jamaican phillipine,indian,chinese etc. And I have never heard any one say anything about anyone except the neighbor of the jamaicans they used to have a party every year he hated jamaican music,but he liked his nieghbors me myself I like bob marley so I enjoyed it.

White people don't say anything because they are too afraid of the PC police, but they are thinking about it. The longtime residents will talk amongst themselves. The truth is Whites will tolerate some Asians and lighter skinned Hispanics, but will often draw the line when a black moves onto their street. Also, an interracial couple will produce black children who will be going to their all white school. They are thinking: "Uh oh..there goes the neighborhood."

It is true that LI (Nassau especially) is definitely not that diverse, in that particular towns or villages tend to have homogeneous racial makeup (not always, but often). But I think that people are correct in that if you're a nice person and keep up your house etc, you won't have much difficulty. I work in a very wealthy, white town and there are several interracial couples, and lesbian couples, and they seem to be social with others. I know other interracial couples in white neighborhoods, and the same deal. Of course, these are upper middle class, educated folks with good jobs. That makes all the difference. If you don't want your husband and kids to be the only folks of AA ancestry look into Pt. Washington/Great Neck/Manhasset. $$$, great schools, but have established, m/c AA enclaves. Great Neck and Pt. Washington will have a bit more diversity in their schools. Best commute on LI too, if that's an issue. Unfortunately, on the South Shore, the more economically and racially diverse an area is, the worse the schools are. My parents just moved to West Hempstead, and I love their neighborhood (except for Hempstead Tpke.) . But a lot of people are down on the schools. Similar situation in Malverne. I did work at the MS in Malverne, and there were some tough kids, but they were far otnumbered by nice ones. I would look at Rockville Centre, I were you. I think it would be a good option for South Nassau. Good schools, good commute, a bit more diversity.

You'll also find degrees of acceptance within individual communities depending on what part of the community it is (especially on the South Shore).

For instance, if you're a black, Hispanic, or interracial family and can afford an $800K-plus house south of Montauk Hwy, it's a given that you're in a professional or upper-white-collar bracket (probably a doctor, lawyer, stockbroker, whatever) and most or all neighbors will be fine with it.

In the middle-income areas (houses $400-$600K, between Sunrise and Montauk, or Southern State and Montauk) of that same community, a minority or interracial family MAY give rise to some sense of awkwardness or apprehension -- or may not, depending on what community it is.

Just as an FYI, the community I live in has always been and still is predominately (more than 95%) white. nbres hit it on the head, too: Asian and Middle Eastern are not unwelcome in most communities and do not provoke the "there goes the neighborhood" response.

yea I do my whole life 45 years and I am not naive.I live in a white nieghborhood and we have all the people I said in my development.And when a new black student arives at the school nobody shuns them the kids are fine. maybe it is because people like to put these impressions into there children black and white, that is why this is still a topic in 2007. You say this now, but what would you do if your neighborhood changes like Valley Stream or Baldwin did. I bet you would have your home up for sale in no time.

I have always found that the biggest racists are the liberal whites who swear they are not. Liberal Whites will always use euphemisms such as "good school or good neighborhood" or "bad school or bad neighborhood." When in fact what they really mean is that a "good school" is nice and white and the "bad school" is too black for their kids to attend. Liberal whites also feel no compunction about insulting working class whites as bigots. They are so much better than those low brow people who dare speak their mind honestly. The truth is is that the liberal whites are often the real bigots. When it comes down to it liberal whites don't want their daughters dating and having sex with black guys either. They seek to wall themselves as much as possible from the lower class - meaning African-Americans. Although they have no problem imposing all their PC stuff on working class whites.

Far from a liberal!! I was just getting your blood going I can see where you stand and it did not take much. You think because a black couple who obviously are working class buy a home in your nieghborhood it will turn into ci or wyandanch or something,But where you are wrong is they themselves are trying to get away from that. Like I said before I have had black people around the corner from me for years and they work just as hard as us to keep there house nice. I may be missing something here but my nieghborhood did not turn into harlem.
