My family and I are considering a move to Long Island based on a potential job opportunity. The job would put us smack dab in the middle of Nassua County. I am curious as to how $200K (our anticipated joint family income) will hold up in the areas of Rockville Centre or Garden City? Are those two areas recommended locations for someone relocating to Nassua County?
A little more about us; we enjoy eating out and taking our dog for walks. With that in mind, we need a solid selection of restaurants in the area and somewhere to take the dog for a walk. It seems as though Rockville Centre has a park (I am assuming that it is OK for dogs on leashes) and a good concentration of restaurants. ANY help you can provide on the cost of living, additional areas to investigate or overall insights into Nassua County would be greatly appreciated.

In case you are unfamiliar with the local geography
Moving 2 LI, in case you are unfamiliar with the local geography, I've sent you an explanation of the very, very confusing geography of "Lawn Guyland" as a DM (Direct Message).
I think your question depends on what type of housing you are looking for. Is it just you and your husband? Do you have or plan to have children? I would say 200k in most areas will get you a very comfortable lifestyle, but Rockville Centre and Garden City are two of the more expensive areas, so it depends on how big of a house you are looking at. I would say almost all of Nassau county has a lot of restaurants, but RVC and Garden City are more "walkable" than some others. Check out the local MLS at
Oftentimes, the MLSLI.com lists a place's location by the community named in that place's mailing address, which is, more often than not, different from the city, village or hamlet where that place is actually located.
You can find out in which community (city, village or CDP) a place is actually located, which is oftentimes different from the community named in that place's mailing address, by using the Census Bureau's online address search function. (CDP or Census Designated Place is the Census Bureau equivalent for a hamlet in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.)
And, among other things, the Census Bureau's online address search function also indicates in which school district an address is located.
There hasn't been a house legitimately on the market in Garden City for around $200K in probably 25 years. We bought our first house there mid-1990s and I think we saw one house under $300K and it was an estate sale in a bad location.
All, thanks for the great information so far!! I have made some calls to friends and they have pointed us in the direction of either Port Washington or Great Neck. Do either of those areas have any solid apartment complexes? My husband and I want to ensure we learn the area before we invest in a home.
