Why people would live where they are miserable or cant afford to live a decent lifestyle is beyond me. I would be the first one to pack and go if I were unhappy.

well life isn't all that simple, is it?

1) there is family, who live here and whether they do it outwardly or not, there is a guilt factor there
2) friends, they live here, they generally don't live outside of the area
3) jobs, you have one here, you have to go looking for something outside the area. I have a pretty decent job that although I can find somewhere else, at my level isn't as easy as making a phone call and getting one
4) fear - fear of the unknown, fear of making a mistake
5) housing - some of us bought houses here, kind of locks you to a place, transaction costs are high
6) unknown - not knowing where you want to go, just knowing that you want to go somewhere

those are the general reasons I think

I have all 6 going for me.

This is us as well. My mom is widowed and so is my MIL, both work full time and cannot retire yet, some friends are here and I don't want to move out of state unless my mom retires and moves with us but not in the same house with us. My MIL would stay on LI because she has 3 grandkids and 2 other married sons who aren't planning on leaving right now. The job thing for me is iffy, I work in a school cafeteria so I am not tied down to it, I am a sub right now. I could work out of state in another school if I had to I guess. My brother has been living out of NY almost 12 years first it was florida and now chicago. It's not that easy to just pick up and go and start a new life like everyone claims. Maybe in 10 years we will move off LI.

This is our plan also to move off the island in about 10 or so years. What we are waiting for are our kids to finish middle and high school. We are hoping to finish paying off our NY home in the next 5 years then use the extra $1000 to pay for a house in Myrtle beach area. We would keep our NY house if possible for if the kids went to NY colleges. We would be leaving because we couldn't retire and live on the island.

I think most if not all people leave b/c they can't afford it. Anyone who doesn't legitimately like LI is crazy. Look at what we have compared to most of the country. I don't know about you guys, but I feel so blessed to live here. I'd rather live like a bum on LI then live like a queen anywhere else.

Grass isn't always greener, folks

Clearly you have not set foot in the LI picture thread. Case dismissed.

Disagreed. I know a few people who were doing just fine on the Island, but they still left. Even if the cost of living was 40% lower, I'd still have plans to leave. Long Island just isn't for me.

Different strokes for different folks, you gotta go where you're happy

Fair enough but it was hotter on LI today, and looking at Farmingville, we're both in border towns.
