Is it arrogance that allows LIers to state" Those that leave , leave only because they cant afford it"
Reminds me of a bitter relationship breakup where the person who was dumped belittles and justifies in his mind why said person left. Seems many on this forum mistake a persons refusal to keep getting bent over with said persons ability to pay for services. Many I know have left LI because they know there is no future there for their kids. Many haveleft for overcrowdedness, unfavorable firearms laws, nicer weather, and nicer people.

saying it's the "only" reason is foolish. But the statement is valid in many cases.

Low self esteem syndrome applied to LI as the abusive husband? "He hit me because I deserved it"
In the end, "can't afford it" is completely subjective and not really usable for wide sweeping generalizations. It's likely that for as many people who leave because they deem it unaffordable there are similar numbers of people who are "stuck" due to employment constraints - they can't leave even if they wanted to.
People leave because they leave and I don't think anyone can argue that LI is exponentially more transient then it was 20 years ago.

And what the hell does DirectTV have to do with anything?

Where's the fun if we don't have sweeping generalizations?
I mean c'mon a statement like.."No one can afford it, except all the illegals" just brings so much entertainment around here
More seriously, I think the world is exponentially more transient today than 20 years ago, not just LI.

We left because once we factored in things like buying a home, vacations, savings and taxes we couldn't afford the premium that a lot of Islanders pay. So you could say we left because we couldn't afford it.

Agreed.
Generally, but not always.
What I do find it that the ones who are bitter about leaving generally have a real need to be sour on LI. Validation, approval etc. Not sure why. Perhaps they were forced against their will to leave family and friends. Perhaps they feel their way of life escaped them here economically and culturally. Cant say I always disagree...who knows, its a personal decision.
I know many who left who never looked back and I know equally as many who left, that cant afford to come home that are homesick and heartbroken.LI is a very unique place and sometimes you need to leave to appreciate it.
Find your happy place and cherish it be it LI, NC or beyond.
Peace,
Crooks

As pp said, affordability is subjective. There are plenty of people on LI that can't afford it, don't need to stay, but would never consider leaving. It is what it is, people do what they do for a variety of reasons.
For us, the biggest factors in us leaving were:
- the skyrocketing taxes, which meant we'd eventually have to leave no matter what. There is no way we could see any reasons to pay a minimum of $1,000 a month in taxes...paying off your mortgage doesn't really buy you a better quality of life on LI.
- family had already re-located out of state - I now only have 1 sibling left on Long Island. She has no plans to leave right now, but it's not looking like any of her kids will settle there, so we'll see.
- not economically feasible to expect my children to be able to live there when they grow up. We don't want our kids to fall into the "I got a great job in NYC and now I'm stuck here" trap, we want them to grow up in a place that's affordable and where taxes won't price them out of homes.
People come and go for all different reasons. Two of my best friends from HS did not grow up on Long Island and never came back after college. My best friend will retire with an extremely hefty pension at age 55 and is already shopping for her retirement home in other states. Will she be able to afford to live here? Yes, but like many others she doesn't see the return on her dollars for what she pays. I'm trying to talk her into a beach house in Wilmington, NC....we'll see

Nassau County is No. 1 -- in property taxation, at least.
As per Tax Foundation, a nonpartisan group based in Washington, D.C.
People are leaving because they can't afford is true. But people who are happy about this fact are sick. People are leaving because they can and they smart. When you go buy anything do you not look at what you are paying for and if its really worth ? If not then you are fool.
People want to stay in long island but if they are forced to leave that's not a good thing. Why do we have to keep paying more in taxes and get less in services.
New York, Long Island Taxes: Pay more in Property Taxes and Get even less
support tax cap so we can make long island a better place. I don't want to cut my budget so the other guy can have BMW.
