That's a great list of and a testament to our dedication to quality education in NY. The poor educational rankings is another testament, one to the haphazard way our government has funneled money to special interest groups such as the teacher's union instead of using that money to achieve a world class education system that NYers deserve.
How to fix:
Take away the free pension plans/free healthcare/fringe benefits and cut the wages of teachers in departments with a surplus of applicants by 30%. Take those funds and hire a 2nd teacher. We'd double the amount of teachers without raising taxes a penny. It is what is best for our children, just not the public unions and their lobbyist groups.

You got a ball? My gym teacher used to set up cones and have us walk around them in the parking lot. Good times had by all.

Here we go again.
Obviously taxes are too high in this area.
Now the part about "poor educational rankings" comes from where exactly?

You're being much too cruel, freeze the current pension plan and institute going forward a 401(k) containing a 6% match. Of course they should have a healthcare plan - only the healthcare plan should contain provisions for co-pay/deductibles for large expenditure items.

Where are the taxes 7K in Suffolk county? That must include STAR - otherwise, I'd venture to say they are higher than that.

No kidding. What I love is that there are some states that fund their budget by property taxes, Texas being the best example, and they don't even make the list.
As to being too harsh. A 6% match is unheard of, but if that's what it takes to do away with the Lead Zeppelin that is the NYS Pension fund then I'm for it.
