What towns would you recommend? Preferably towns with a village area that has some shopping, bars, restaurants, nightlife, etc for young people.

My girlfriend works in Manhattan so doesn't want anything too far out east, but the downside is that most of my family and friends all live out east! (The Mt Sinai, Selden areas....)

I am familiar with PJS (Port Jeff Station) that has a nice variety of bars and restaurants in the village area by the ferry, so something similar to that is kinda what we are looking for....

btw, Long Beach is out, too expensive! Our budget is about 1700-1800 for a 1 or 2 bedroom. Plus too far to get out east.

I have heard good things about Huntington, Rockville Centre(don't know much about Nassau towns though), Mineola (close to train by Winthrop), Babylon, Bay Shore, Syosset, Great Neck and Westbury/Garden City.

What are your recommendations....

Default A map of the Hamlet of Huntington in the Town of Huntington, Suffolk County

Logical95, the general consensus would be Huntington; but, it is important to know that there are 3 "Huntingtons" (from smallest to largest, in order of acreage):

1. There is the Hamlet of Huntington (whose "downtown" commercial district is colloquially referred to as Huntington Village);

2. There is the "Huntington, NY 11743" ZIP Code postal zone, and it includes the Hamlet of Huntington and parts of 2 villages (municipal corporations) and 6 other hamlets (unincorporated areas) within its service area; and,

3. There is the Town of Huntington, and it includes 4 villages and 15 hamlets as well as the "Huntington, NY 11743" ZIP Code postal zone and all or parts of 11 other ZIP Code postal zones, within its borders.

A map of the Hamlet of Huntington in the Town of Huntington, Suffolk County:

The Hamlet of Huntington has a different border than does the "Huntington, NY 11743" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Huntington, NY 11743" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Huntington and a place can have other than a "Huntington, NY 11743" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Huntington): places that have a "Huntington, NY 11743" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Huntington are in the Hamlet of West Hills, the Hamlet of Halesite, the Village of Huntington Bay, the Village of Lloyd Harbor, the Hamlet of Cold Spring Harbor, the Hamlet of Centerport, the Hamlet of Greenlawn, the Hamlet of Elwood, the Hamlet of Huntington Station and the Hamlet of Dix Hills; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Huntington with a "Cold Spring Harbor, NY 11724", "Huntington Station, NY 11746", "Greenlawn, NY 11740" and "Centerport, NY 11721" mailing address.

Pt. Washington would be quite a hike to Miller Place! I know the ride from Huntington to Pt. Washington; to Miller Place or Selden from Pt. Washington - not something I would suggest

How about Sayville? I was out there earlier and it is a nice place with restaurants and bars, close proximity to beaches and LIRR and not a bad ride to Mt Sinai for family or Port Jeff for additional going out options.

I appreciate all of your input! Some great choices.....yes I made a similar post in the past but my gf and I cannot decide on where to live...she doesn't want to be pulled all the way out to Suffolk, and I do not want to be pulled all the way towards the city haha....so it's a bit of a dilemma.....

I am not so sure about Great Neck/Port Washington area.....the drive out to see my fam and friends in Miller Place and Selden would be kinda rough....

And yes, Sayville is very nice, but the train commute to Manhattan from Sayville is too long for my gf....she wants something 45 minutes to 1 hour or under....she doesn't want to have one of those two hour commutes both ways....

How about the Village of Farmingdale ? It's right on the LIRR, and from what I've seen, has some nightlife and some decent rental apts. Never lived there, so I don't know firsthand, but it seems nice

You're probably best off settling right on the Nassau/Suffok border - that leaves you Huntington, Babylon and Farmingdale as options.

Hmm I do not know much about Babylon? Is it similar to PJS and Huntington?
