We're considering moving there, so any comments would be appreciated!
Does anyone know how the TAXES are in Jericho? Is one more or less desirable than the other? ~ East Birchwood verus West Birchwood... ~ Syosset schools versus Jericho schools... I like that it's a good school district, but is it a nice learning environment? Or does it get overly competitive? (I hate cut-throat places where little ones need tutors just to keep up and teenagers get Jaguars and breast-implants as graduation gifts!) Where exactly is that "industrial area" I've heard we should avoid? Thanks in advance! ![]() |

You seem to be asking the same questions I have asked. I too would like to know!

I have patients that reside in the "acclaimed" jericho district. The kids get braces on their teeth at age six (which is practically child abuse because very few children need them at that age) and then they get them again at at 10 because they didn't work the first time but the kids get made fun of if they don't have them twice. The kids are badly behaved, stuck up little princesses(even the boys I've met fall into that category). Bleek.
If I won the biggest house in Jericho in a lottery, you couldn't pay me to live there one day. I'd sell it. |

Thanks for your input, KellyFG! But wow, that's pretty harsh and disappointing information about Jericho...
Does anyone have anything positive to say about this town? (because we just saw some houses that we REALLY like there!) |

Excellent school ratings, excellent location, somewhat reasonable houses.

My own kids attend Jericho school district. Neither one had braces at age six, and nobody made fun of them. Both of my kids have large groups of great friends from nice, hardworking families with good values. Sure, some of the kids are badly behaved and spoiled, but I think you can say that no matter where you live on Long Island. The kids at Jericho are certainly not all princesses. There are loads of nice, normal families and kids in the school district, and it has nothing to do with how rich they are or aren't. You obviously don't even live here or have kids that attend the school, so stop badmouthing it when you don't have any firsthand knowledge. To APNY: Again, there are plenty of great kids/families in this school. It can get competitive academically because it is upper middle class and higher, and most parents have high levels of education, and are professionals that want the same for their kids. Having said that, the school itself is incredibly supportive and helpful. Great teachers who go above and beyond for the kids. You pay a lot in taxes, but you do get your money's worth in terms of the quality of the education. Yes, some of the people are snobs, but they are easy to avoid. As far as the neighborhoods, they are all good. Gated townhouse developments, regular homes on smallish lots, and estates. The kids all intermingle, doesn't matter where they live. Good luck! Property taxes are high because of the high school district property tax.

For those who may not be familiar with Jericho: Jericho is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the center-west part of the Town of Oyster Bay in the central part of Nassau County, along the Oyster Bay/North Hempstead town line Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Jericho in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by the Village of Old Westbury, the Village of Brookville, the Village of Muttontown and the Hamlet of Syosset; on the east by the Hamlet of Syosset and the Hamlet of Hicksville; on the south by the Hamlet of Hicksville and the Hamlet of New Cassel in the Town of North Hempstead (the Oyster Bay/North Hempstead town line); and, on the west by the Village of Westbury in the Town of North Hempstead (the Oyster Bay/North Hempstead town line) and the Village of Old Westbury. ![]() The Hamlet of Jericho has a different border than does the "Jericho, NY 11753" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Jericho, NY 11753" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Jericho and a place can be in the Hamlet of Jericho and have other than a "Jericho, NY 11753" mailing address): places that have a "Jericho, NY 11753" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Jericho are in the Village of Brookville, the Village of Muttontown, the Village of Old Westbury, the Hamlet of Syosset and the Hamlet of Hicksville; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Jericho that have a "Westbury, NY 11590" and "Hicksville, NY 11801" mailing address. For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): Excellent Long Island Geographic Resource |

IMO the housing is not that reasonable, its the same type of houses in bellmore or Merrick but $200k more. The reason? better schools and wealthier owners. Nice neighborhoods but i prefer not to be landlocked.......it prefer shore towns (hamlets,Walter)

How's the commute from Jericho to Penn Station? I checked LIRR schedule, it's about 45 mins train ride. Is it hard to get the parking at Hicksville station? I just try to determine the door-to-door commute time for my hubby who works in midtown.
Anyone knows the schools provide full day kindergarten? |
