By Town of Babylon standards it's definitely "up there"; since most of the Town of Babylon is typical long island housing [cape, hi-ranch, ranch, old colonials, splanch and some center-halls] on grid-like streets and smaller to average sized lots. Key word: most.
By Town of Huntington or Smithtown standards it's nothing special because in many hamlets there all you see is mcmansions and large estates.
But have you actually rode through the area since I believe driving on a main-road is a HORRIBLE way of judging an area.

I would not call Copiague, wheatley heights, or medford the hood. I live in medford in an awesome condo complex (golf course ,indoor and outdoor pool) and its not a bad neighborhood.
Now Gordon heights is a hood
Also copiague by the water is good also .
Whyandanch is Bad, Gordon heights is bad.
Most long islanders here i guess consider good onoly a place that has mansions and affordable housing as a 4 bedroom house for $100,000
There are parts of Wyndanch, parts of Brentwood, and parts of Huntington Station I would consider "Hood" I have heard Parts of Amityville and Hempstead also. But I am not familiar with those areas.
Part of the reason Port Jeff is looking more ghetto than ever besides the growing illegal population: http://youtu.be/H6a9MHLB7Z0 Pax cristi homeless shelter. Coram also has one but i think it isn't as big.
And Gordon heights in my opinion is worse than Medford in general, it's a more dangerous neighborhood.
