I can be comfortable there in that town, or I can do Cold Spring Harbor and be house poor. Lived on LI a long time ago, and the above areas are the only towns I really liked. Schools are important! If need be if Im in Centerport i can send them to St Anthonys . Need to move back to LI for family reasons. All opinions appreciated. Thanks.

Still great areas!! Harborfields SD isn't as small as it used to be but still not as big as E. Npt/Npt or Huntington or So. Huntington.
BTW, prices of houses in Cold Spring Harbor aren't what they used to be! CSH didn't escape the market decline. There are actually a couple of houses on the market for less than $600K; well, one is more like a cottage, but the other is a spacious 4 BR house (not "original" either!).
Properties in CSH are more likely to be flat/useable than in Centerport, if that's important.
Oh, would you consider Northport? Nice little Village on the water...
Centerport is a beautiful area and Harborfields is a very desirable school district. I live in E. Npt which isn't far from Centerport. I LOVE this area! We just moved here a year ago and I'm so glad that we did. I was able to buy a larger house in E. Npt since your money goes a bit further here but we also looked in Dix Hills, Fort Salonga, Centerport and Northport. We really wanted a flat property with a pool which was hard to find in some north shore communities. We go down to Cow Harbor in Northport...it's so quaint and beautiful but we also enjoy being close to all of the businesses on Jericho Tpke and Larkfield. Centerport is a bit more "woodsey" and quiet than E.Npt so if that's what you are looking for then you are definitely looking in the right area. Cold Spring Harbor is amazing as well but, like you said, it's extremely pricey. It all depends on your priorities. I love the Npt/E.Npt area and the sense of community that is here. Hope this helps! Good luck on your search!
Centerport is amazing and Harborfields is an excellent highly regarded district. If I were you, I would rather move to that area over CSH anyday, esp if financially it is better for you. You cannot go wrong in Centerport and you cannot go wrong with the Harborfields SD.

I like Northport but my only exposure to it has been the downtown area, where as I am quite familiar with Centerport and CSH. How are the schools in Northport?

Schools in Northport are generally thought of as excellent. Larger than Harborfields and of course definitely much larger than the CSH SD with its homogeneous student population
I'm sure other forum members will chime in here. As a Realtor, I am limited in what I can say here about the quality of any school
Northport is regarded as an excellent school district. Like Elke said, it is definitely bigger than CSH and Harborfields. With that said, it truly is about what you are looking for for your kids. I liked the fact that Northport had a larger SD because I feel it gives more opportunites and more sports/activites for my son. I grew up in a larger district and I really felt like I had so much more available to me as opposed to the smaller districts. Some prefer a smaller district because they feel that their child gets more individual attention and there is more of a personal feel to the district. It's all about what you prefer. You honestly can't go wrong with any of the school districts mentioned.

Why not the Huntington Bay, Halesite, Bay Hills area? Absolutely picturesque and the schools will improve, especially with Polansky being hired as the new Huntington SD Superintendent.

I would never send my children to the Huntington School District. You're right about the beauty of Huntington bay and Halesite. If I ever decide to send my child to St Patricks in Huntington and then St Anthonys then I would live in those towns.

Why not?
