Door to door I bet the average LIer spends 2.5 hours a day commuting. While I admire them for going through the grind day after day, to me that just doesnt seem like living.

I think commuting is fun, especially when you get a window seat and have your laptop on your lap on the internet.

I took a temp job in manhattan and had to commute an hour on the train each way for about 7 months and it was great; no complaints (except when I couldn't find a seat).

If it weren't for commuting, some of us would never find the time to read novels, etc. Commuting can add to some sorely needed "me" time.

I don't commute into the city, but I do spend 45 min - 1 hour driving each way. I don't mind it that much, I go on 25A through Brookville, CSH, Huntington... beautiful drive.

I have a relative who commuted via LIRR (and subways) between Stony Brook and Wall Street, roughly 5 1/2 hours a day. He earned a Masters degree (via Hunter college I think) while riding the LIRR portion of the trek.

There is a difference between train time and car time. Car time tends to increase stress while the train can decrease unless you get stuck next to a loud talker.

Either way, I opted for the 15 minute commute after doing 45+ minutes in my car each way for about 5 years. I really started to hate it after awhile. I'd rather spend the time cooking or playing with my son.

i seriously doubt the average door-to-door is 2.5 hours, i say the majority spend more than 3 hours each day

As with any commute it's a mindset, what are you willing to accept. Poeple post all the time on these boards look for a place to live with a resonable commute (up to 1.5 hours). To each his own...

You would be surprised how long a simple Suffolk to Nassau rush hour commute is.

I am going out on a limb here and say this will explode as people chime in and complain about the LIRR. Oh I average 2.5 total at most each day. Yes I am rediscovering the joys of reading
