Most Caribbean islands are either current or former British colonies hence they speak English albeit with this weird mix of an English and a West Indian accent.

So let's not make this about immigrants not speaking the national language, lets make this about police policing an area where they do not understand the people they are questioning or interacting with. I could just see the problems marenda rights and cases being having problems or officers shooting suspects because they either dont' trust each other or don't understand each other.
Aren't all the immigration exams given in English? So, they are either 1. here illegally or 2. choosing not to speak English. Don't think it will fly if I go to work in Mexico and demand that the whole country of Mexico speak English because I'm now working there. I don't think it works like that.

What are immigration exams? Never heard of those. I've heard of the naturalization process where you are required to speak, read and write English, if you want to become a US citizen.

People People People People.

No one is saying require every police in hempsted to speak Spanish. So NYEconomist you make no sense. I believe English is the language of this country and should be the only language of this country. What I for one is saying is if you're policing them you should understand them or be able to speak.

You're wasting your time. When people argue against this what they are really saying is "these people should learn English". Yes, they should. They probably won't, just like every other first generation of immigrants. Thus, it's in the best interests of justice that you have a few POs that can speak Spanish. This is not a novel concept - go walk around Chinatown in the city and you'll see a lot of Asian cops.

I fully believe they should assimilate because as a country we are fractured currently but at the same time what are we talking about other than adapting a little to the community you serve. The France example is a bad one. You're talking about more than language there. That's about a country experiencing an influx of immigrants like America did in the early part of the century and people complaining about the jobs they are taking away and the country not being equipped to deal the effects.

People this is just simply asking the people that arrest them to or police them to be able to speak to them. No one is saying let's start making Spanish street signs or changing the language in the school
I completely understand your point. However, I believe there needs to be a middle ground. You mention France as a bad example. Then you explain that France is dealing with an influx of immigrants. Isn't the US at this time in history dealing with an influx of immigrants? Isn't there a growing number of US citizens complaining that immigrants are taking US jobs? You mention now it is only one community. I don't know how old you are, but if you recall not so long ago, people would have laughed at many things that are happening now. Hell even a law against seat belts would have been scoffed at in the 60s or 70s. When you were playing Pong, the only video game, in the 70s, did you ever envision games where thugs go through the streets murdering innocent people. My point being, it is one small increment of many.No one is making Spanish street signs? That you will see in your lifetime. After all, it would be for the safety of the community to have their signs in Spanish. It is similar to the saying about the frog(i may have it wrong), you put the frog in the pot and slowly, ever so slowly increase the heat, and he never realizes he is being cooked. Small changes are usually not noticed.

Tell them to move to Miami, it's hard to get an English speaking police officer there sometimes.

Growing up on LI with parents that spoke with a heavy accent made me see the blatant prejudice clearly. I can remember vividly being a 9-10 yr old in the backseat of my fathers car when some guy starts arguing with my father and after realizing he was wrong spews " go back to your own country". We Are all naturalized citizens and that a-hole showed me how messed up people are. It must suck to be you racist uncultured hicks that never had an opportunity to leave this little island or state or country. Having a ton of money and awesome huge home doesn't make you any better than anyone else. For those who expect a 40+ yr old with 2nd grade education learn English, look up the word fossilization and perhaps your will get a little insight.
