Not sure about Carpenter ants but this has worked on other ant types. It's cheap and highly effective.
Collect a number of plastic caps from used plastic water bottles.
Mix 12:1 plain grape jelly to Borax powder. Fill the caps with this.
Place the filled caps in inconspicuous places where there is trouble.
Wait a few weeks.
This have worked for me on large black ants a few years ago then this spring I removed them because the ants had been gone for quite some time. Other ants then started to appear in the same places. I reapplied the treatment and the new ones are now gone.
