What I think is really sad is that the vast majority of the people who become cops on Long Island do so just for the paycheck. I gaurentee you that 70% of the people at that test on Saturday took the test only because of the pay, benefits, and pension ... they don't want to be cops, they just want the paychecks that come with it.
We could cut their pay by 30-40% and still have plenty of candidates.

I think that's a stretch. Besides, how can you guarantee what is in someone else's head?

I think you're initial premise is a very big stretch, but the last sentence is 100% correct either way. A stable income that requires no college degree and no specialized skills will still draw plenty of qualified candidates. NYPD guys with 5 years experience who live on LI will still flock to Suffolk and Nassau jobs to get out of there, even for the for the same pay.
BTW, many cops in NYC are pulling 100K+ salaries easily, considering how easy it is to get overtime.

No specialized skills? Really? That's what you think of police work?
What do you think is required of the job?

Yes, YOU read it correctly, no specialized skills. They don't hire people with PHD's. The requirements for the job are that you pass tests that show you are physically prepared and that you can memorize things, and that you aren't a psycho (although recent events have shown their may be some flaws in the last part).
Then they give you the specialized training AFTER you are hired. You are not required to know how to deliver babies to get hired, you don't even have to have any firearms experience. Maybe YOU weren't aware of that? I mean..it's only on the SC and NCPD employment page.

No need to be nasty. It was an honest question. Continue being nasty and this thread will most likely end up like all the rest on this subject.
Your answer pretty much illustrates how ignorant you are about the matter. Not everyone makes it through the academy.
But then again, I'd wager a few folks here would know all about that.

So now you threaten to tattle. Very grown up. Are you the one being all nasty , eh YZETTE?
Are you sure you aren't talking about the Navy Seals?
There are a lot of very average people working for NCPD and SCPD, despite whatever PBA propaganda BS you've been fed. There are a few crackpots who should have never been given guns and badges. There are also some standout guys there too, but the same can be said of NYPD or any other police force out there.

I'm not the one targeting people for personal attacks. Read back through the thread.
But have it your way. I really don't care. As the other thread said, it appears that you cannot discuss any of this without resorting to bashing, and frankly, I couldn't care less what you, with your very obvious and transparent axe to grind, think about me.
Indeed, there are people in this world from whom affection would be an insult.
Enjoy your evening, such as you can.

I think for people already in the system, there might be a little wiggle room here and there - but nothing earth shattering. The PBA will fight everything tooth and nail every step of the way and the state laws are on their side for the most part.
Although honestly, would anyone not be completely psyched if we at least knew that 10-15 years from now property taxes would level out at some kind of sane level because compensation for new hires had been reduced considerably? I'd much rather that happen than these little BS "union concessions" that seem to do nothing but push more cost further down the road. Didn't 34,000 people just take the SCPD test? I'm pretty sure they would probably get the same exact number if only a meager 401k was offered.
