If you stretch it another ten minutes you can move to Islip. It's a nice town, very low in crime, schools are pretty good. With in a few minutes you are near Sunrise Hwy or Southern State Parkway.
If you like variety there are four supermarkets in a few mile radius. There are some nice parks near by. Other good areas include Brightwaters which is just a bit east of West Islip. Very pretty places there.
Avoid Bay Shore/Bay Shore downtown area (but some Islip school residents have Bay Shore addresses.)

ummmmm , what are you talking about ? Did you really say that people with vowels at the ends of their names are lower class ? Is that what you meant to say ? In 2007 ? I guess that includes Franklin DelanO Roosvelt, then.
Or did you mean that people with vowels at the ends of their names are upper class, like the Sopranos ?

Nancy, you misunderstood my post. When I lived in NB, Deer Park was basically an Italian neighborhood and was very nice. I was surprised to hear that Tony Soprano's distant cousins would allow it to go downhill.

Below is a fairly accurate picture.
Sorry NBres NorthBabs a tough sell.
I'd head North or South....its time.
We had to leave CI in the 80s.
It was a tough decision ...but necessary.

In the New York Times today there was an article that showed the extent to which the New York metro areas demographics have changed. Everyone is aware that whites are only 65% of the population today in America - down from 90% in the 1960s. Whites are also projected to drop to less than 50% of America's population sometime in the 2040s - just 30 or so years from now. New York state's white population is barely 60%. However, whites are now a minority in down state New York. The four of the five boroughs of New York Ciity are majority non-white: Brooklyn 35% white, Queens 31% white, Manhattan 48% white, Bronx 11% white, Staten Island is 67% white. Here on Long Island the population is changing also: Nassau 69% white and Suffolk is 75% white.
The following school districts that are now effectively majority minority are: Herricks, New Hyde Park-Garden City Park, Elmont, Valley Stream, Baldwin, Hempstead, Westbury, Glen Cove, Malverne, Uniondale, Freeport, Roosevelt, Glen Cove, Lawrence, Amityville, Copiague, Wyandanch, Brentwood, Central Islip, Bayshore, South Country
The following school districts are now or soon will be less than 75% white by 2010: Port Washington, Great Neck, Long Beach, West Hempstead, Hicksville, Mineola, Roslyn, Huntington, South Huntington, Deer Park, North Babylon, William Floyd, Longwood, Riverhead, Half Hollow Hills, East Meadow, Floral Park, Syosset, Patchogue-Medford, Farmingdale, Elwood, Comsewogue, and probably Middle Country
The following school districts are between 76% and 89%: Sachem, Connectquot sp., Center Moriches, Carle Place, Manhasset, Rockville Center, Lynbrook, Lindenhurst, West Babylon, Babylon, Three Village, Port Jefferson, Hauuppauge, Commack, Harborfields, Levittown, Island Trees, Plainview-Old Bethpage, Islip, Jericho, East Williston, East Rockaway, Franklin Square, North Merrick, Lynbrook
These districts are still 90%-plus white: Wantagh, Garden City, Seaford, Massapequa, Plainedge, Bethpage, North Shore, Merrick, North Bellmore, Bellmore, Northport-East Northport, Smithtown, Kings Park, West Islip, East Islip, Miller Place, Mt.Sinai, Rocky Point, Shoreham-Wading River, Sayville, Bayport-Bluepoint, Eastport-South Manor, Cold Spring Harbor - I think that's it. I do this stuff off the top of my head so I definitely left out some districts in all categories.

I live in Babylon Village , Trudy. You should check it out. Only a few years ago , you could have bought a pretty home on a canal for less than $250 k. Now, they are more than twice that. And, they are tiny bungalows. But, Babylon Village is a lovely place to raise children. People stay for generations.

Nancy is right, Babylon Village is nice, well maintained, and pretty. There are decent parks near by, good schools as far as I know, and a nifty town with a health food store and bakery.

Thanks for the input! Babylon Village actually is my preference, to be honest - I just loved it when I went out there looking at open houses, it's SUCH a pretty area - but West Babylon might be a little more affordable in terms of houses. So I'm looking in both of those areas.

Id go with less house in the Village than more in West or North Bab.
Look north of Montauk South of Sunrise...Its not too bad.
As they say
