West Babylon would be a great choice. I grew up there and gone to school there as well. Yes, people are friendly there. They were back then and they are now. I have loads of family and friends that reside in Long Island and have different levels of income and are adjusted just fine.
West Babylon is for the working class and others, depending on where you choose to settle. The schools are mostly A schools and their exchange student programs are great! There are plenty of parks to explore with your family and boating activities.
Yes, West Babylon has a few diverse groups there, so being Jewish should not be a problem. And no, you will not have a problem there. There are many large Jewish, Italian, Spanish, Irish, and Asians residing there quietly. Remember, it is family oriented, my two older brothers, and sister have lived there for over 20 years and they still love it.
There is no perfect State, City, County, Town, ect.. You just have to explore the possibilities and in the process be selective. We all know what we like and what we do not like in a neighborhood. Just look for those qualities and ask questions and you should be fine.
Best of luck with you decision to move to West Babylon..you won't regret it!

Until you see what you could get for your money elsewhere on LI.
I do believe there are better buys out there.
W Babylons not bad....but shop smart....dont overdo.
I wouldnt want the most expensive house on the block becuse at the end of the day itll still be in West Babylon.
Sometimes I see these palatial overly expanded homes (in my neighborhood too)that are completely out of sync with a neighborhood.
Dont be them...they suck
Best of luck

In West Babylon south of Montauk HIghway , there are lovely waterfront homes. Some are on canals and some are on the bay, but they are very nice places.

Is it in a flood zone?
I know some are better than others down there.

According to the Long Island Newsday we are all in a flood zone ; those of us who are south of Montauk HIghway from Amityville to West Islip. But, there won't be a hurricane (at least until AFTER I leave )

Well, the places with canals like in Babylon Village, Amityville and all are really in trouble. Those $750 K townhomes on Willow Street in BV that are between two canals, whoa.... they will be totally gone in a hurricane. They are even pretty waterlogged in heavy rain .

That's true. It depends on how high the bulkheading is, how well the drain system in the streets function, and also the water table in particular neighborhoods.
For example, the "Bay streets" (West Bay, East Bay, Center Bay) just west of Good Samaritan Hospital are notorious for flooding in even heavy rains, because of all those conditions (low-lying, bad drains, high water table), but if you go another 2 blocks to the west of there... no problem.
Many of the south of Montauk Hwy neighborhoods were built in the 1950s or 1960s on what was originally salt marsh. The developers brought in "fill" but depending on how good a job was done, it still has a high water table. I used to live just east of Good Sam in one of those areas. That is why almost none of the houses there (between Good Sam and Robert Moses Pkwy) have basements; they're all on slabs. The few ranches that were built with a partial basement (BAD mistake) used to flood in EVERY slightly more than heavy rain. One of my neighbors owned one, and they burned out sump pumps every couple of years. No way to correct it, because it was groundwater coming up... and they weren't even directly on the canal!
We are all in a flood zone south of Montauk though. Ask any mortgage lender.
