Copiague Information
Hello, My husband and I are in the process of buying a house in Copiague. About 7 blocks south of the train station, not far from great neck road. We thought we checked out the neighborhood good enough, however, I recently read some negative posts about the neighborhood and have concerns about moving there. We currently live in Queens, have no school aged kids and are blue collar workers. We already realize that it is a diverse neighborhood. We like that. I just want to know if it's safe place. Can I walk my dogs at night? Are there many break-ins? Does it get rowdy at night in the summer? Gang problems? I still have a chance to back out of the deal so any information is helpful.

Hmm, I have relatives who live there and their kids go to the schools. It's an ok neighborhood but not great. I would not live there but they seem to love it. It is a diverse community. As far as anything else I could not tell you. They walk their dog at night, and the kids (now teens) don't seem worried about the neighborhood.

It's mostly working class people. I have heard that there is an illegal immigrant problem there. It's generally a below-average area but still not a horrible area; I hear parts closer to the ocean are better. The school district is below-average. I don't hear about much crime coming from that area but you really have to live there to come to that conclusion since the news doesn't always cover all the crime, especially gang activity. (I think it's a very convenient location though, the Massapequa Mall is right up the street; the stores along Sunrise Hwy in Copiague are great, close to the LIRR, near the Ocean and tanner park).. I think it's an excellent choice for a single person with no kids.
As for you closing the deal on the house, it really depends on what YOU like. No other person will have to live there but YOU so don't let anyone give you a blunt yes or no answer. My advice is to just drive around the area and see if it satisfies you, ask some neighbors of their honest opinion of the area and then with all the information learned; think deeply if the area suits your desires and personality.
(I spend a good amount of time in Copiague)
Good luck.

Thanks to everyone for your opinions and advice. I'm still just a little concerned but I think I'm going through with this move. And I do love the convenience of the location. Especially being able to walk to a store. It'll remind me of queens. I do hope I meet some neighbors who can speak english though!

JM2C---it's a bad investment due to the bad schools reputation, and people on LI seem to highly prioritze that. That being said, if you're not considering your house an investment, and it's really your dream home then go for it. The location is excellent, but just next door, similarly priced Lindenhurst has a decent, rep., and is probably better than most think. Also, Babylon is nice, even if you don't need schools they are important to others. Massapequa SD seems to be the gem of that area, but it's pricey, and you could just go there anytime.
BTW-There's a guy on here from Copiague named LongIslandEddie. I would DM him with your exact address you want and I'm sure he'll help you.

A map of the Hamlet of Copiague in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County
TheColorPink, just be aware that there are places that have a "Copiague, NY 11726" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Copiague: these places are in the Hamlet of North Amityville (and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Copiague with an "Amityville, NY 11701" and "Lindenhurst, NY 11757" mailing address).

Good geography is everyone's responsibility.
NYS Geographic Glossary and Excellent Long Island Geographic Resource may be of some help in understanding the geography of "Lawn Guyland".
