When was the last time you tried to buy one? Last time I went to buy some ammo - the guy wanted my drivers license and life history before registering it in a computer and taking my picture to boot.

Stop going to big box retailers

I have no problems buying ammunition from regular gun stores, or even online.

They ask for your drivers license to buy cold medicine.

My post didn't say a legal gun, although I suppose he could have walked into the store with a shotgun which is prefectly legal and could have been purchased that morning...

...but then you drag me into a gun debate which is exactly what my post was against.

It's a DRUG (failed war on...) issue!!

That it is. There's a good chance that the 4 people would have been stabbed, bludgeoned or garroted if the murderer didn't have a gun.

The new drug market is subsidized by the govt and filling the pockets of the pharmaceutical industry. This a-hole would be a heroin addict, getting assistance, needles or detox from us poor old taxpayers for pennies if it were legalized.

Instead we spend billions to pretend to fight the "Taliban" while we let those poppy fields blossom, they pocket the dough and flood us with cheap dope. We subsidize the pharma giants who flood the streets with "oxy" and other synthetic opiates. We prescribe opioids for every hangnail and perceived sore back. We spend billions filling the jails with pot smokers and crackheads. We are a nation of addicts (and alcoholics) with a govt complicit in continuing a completely PHONY war on drugs.

Add 4 more innocents to that war total. Forget Afghanistan. End the puritanical nonesense at home. What was he stealing? Drugs? Money? Money to buy drugs? Deal with the source of the problem. Filling a backpack with drugs that have a higher value than jewelry OR cash is a DRUG problem, not a gun problem.
I'm inclined to agree with you. I, too, did not see how a discussion of gun laws is relevant to the news item. But, hey, if it gives us something new to talk about...

Starting with what you've said, I look at this on a macro level. For one thing, I think that drug abuse and addiction themselves should be regarded as a public health issue, not a criminal one. Not saying that violent actions committed while high or in the pursuit of a high shouldn't be crimes. Just that throwing people in the clink for being stoned or high isn't going to solve any problems.

Taking an even wider view, rampant drug addiction is a comment on the society where it happens. Think of the reasons why people turn to drugs: They want an escape. Now think of areas where drug addiction is a major problem. Projects, poor areas, places where people are not well-educated and don't have a lot of opportunity. That's not to say that educated people in good areas don't develop addictions, but that there is a correlation between socioeconomic misery and drug abuse and drug-related violent crime.

That
is what we need to fix. Arming everyone to the teeth will not change the root causes of the drug-induced crime: Poverty and misery. Neither will pouring money into the DEA or other law enforcement agencies to go after suppliers and dealers. The war on drugs is an abysmal failure and a disgusting waste of taxpayer money. Focus on equality, giving people a chance or a leg up when they need it, education so that they can make something of themselves, and social services and counseling when they are at risk, and you will reduce the number of people who feel compelled to either turn to drugs or buy a gun.

Kumbaya.
