This is a terrible tragedy. I hope the perpetrator is caught and punished to the fullest extent of the law.
I really don't see where the political discussion of gun laws is relevant. Nothing I've read so far indicates whether the victims had guns, tried to own guns, would own guns, or would use guns to defend themselves.
I am not saying that because I am 90% liberal, but because there is nothing in the story to support any discussion of it. I take a moderate view of gun ownership. I am not a gun nut by any stretch, but I do support the right to defend oneself with a legally owned firearm.
And last I checked, I'm a decent shot.
All pharmacies should be equipped with a scatter gun under the counter with both barrels poking out on a swivel mount loaded with #5 turkey load. Believe me - the perps won't even try it. What's that? you want some oxycodone - okay, one order of oxycodone with an ounce of zinc (we believe in being enviornmentally friendly) to go!!
But no! the politicos are more concerned about the rights of drug addicts/neighborhood gangs than the rights of tax paying citizens. Then you read headlines like "Police shocked to find 4 dead bodies in a pharmacy" Whadya think would happen when a druggie comes in - they would all be sitting around a campfire singing Kumbaya?
Well most guns used in crimes in New York do originate as legally purchased guns from the south.
Anyway to put aside the gun debate, this is a huge tragedy. Thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of those affected by this tragedy.
They come from Ohio, PA, CA, TN, TX and other states as well -- including NY. If NY gun laws weren't so strict, there wouldn't be a market for illegal guns from elsewhere. Chances are if someone in the pharmacy had been carrying, and this story might have had a different ending.
God bless the victims who fell to the hands of a dirtbag. He deserves the death penalty.
I'm disappointed to see something like this happen so close to where are are looking to buy a home - Patchogue Village.
If it's making me think twice about buying in the vicinity, what impact does this have on the RE market?
Take it as a sign - a sign to look very CAREFULLY before you do buy. Sure, some will say this was a random act, crime of opportunity, etc. I believe the press reported this particular store was held up before - an aware person would be cognizant that the neighborhood is not that good if "repeated criminal" acts were being perpetrated. The murdering of 4 people certainly elevates the amount of awareness one should show towards a particular locale.
How close is the store to the location you are looking at? If it was within 1-1.5 miles, I'd be extremely hesistant in buying there.

The number 1 state where illegally obtained firearms come from is Georgia
