We used to have a vacation house in E. Jewett until it burned down.
I have 4 places on the list of possible places to move to when my wife retires in 2 years:
Reno/Sparks
Albuquerque
Grants Pass, OR
Prescott, AZ
No humidity, lower cost of living, 4 seasons but mild winters.

HAHA That WAS the last thing I did about 1/2 way over the Throggs. That and a very loud "BYE-BYE!!" Really, I loved LI for most of my time there (my whole life exception of college and 10 in the city, but the last 2-3 years and the changes in residents, attitude, etc. just made me shake in excitment to get off the sand spit once and for all. Certainly there are many folks very happy there and those of us whom determined it was no longer our cup of tea should leave to make the room for folks who want to live there. That's how I looked at-we all don't want the same thing, if we did there would not be enough of "it" to go around. So, blessings, piece, and we are outa there!!
Funerals are the only thing that will get me back! Family can come to me, plenty of room, fresh air, and peace up here

LOL...back in '88, I actually took both hands off the wheel and saluted with TWO middle fingers!!!!
Hey...to each their own. If people want to stay on Long Island and still love it, despite its negatives...so be it. For me...leaving LI was the best move I ever made. 31 years was enough for me...but I am still glad that my childhood was spent there during the wonder years. But as an adult and homeowner, life is great up here in the Catskill Mountains...and we're about to hit my favorite two months of the year up here! Autumn in The Catskills is absolutely stunning.

Agreed, we have some red and yellow leaves showing already, 3 cords of split wood in the barn, the raspberries and blackberries are lighting up the forests, the corn is almost as high as an elephant's eye, not a lick of humidty and bright bright blue skies. It is magical without a doubt.
The tent catipillers did a real good job on the leaves this year though, so I think the trees are turning a tad early. I really hope many of the victims of the munching make it, you can see swaths of nothing but trunks and limbs on the mountians if you look closely Oh well, nature at its finest. Enjoy this beautiful day-not a cloud in the sky.

I didn't leave angry only disappointed. For about a year or two I was thinking about moving back until while driving up for a visit I heard Mario Cuomo say that it didn't matter if the young were leaving NY, as immigrants were moving in. That's when I got pissed.

We are looking to move to Hendersonville TN. It is beautiful, the schools are great and it is very family orientated. They have everything we have here and then some, as far as shopping goes. Although they do not have the beaches (ours are full of bacteria anyway) they have a huge lake (Old Hickory Lake)! It's worth some looking into(IMO). Good luck with whatever you choose

I grew up in Oceanside and am now in Raleigh after many stops across the country. Have been here 18 years.
Some New Yorkers adapt well to NC, others hate the weather and everything else.
We have real Nathan's franks and Gabila's knishes + some true NY pizza made by guys from Bkln.
Salaries in many fields are much lower, but taxes are phenominally less than LI.
Houses of worship for all faiths exist. The Raleigh area is very cosmopolitan and accepts diverse lifestyles.
Weather. Hmmm. Been in the 100's this week and muggy. So ya wanna come here, y'all come on down, heah.
Best to you from an ex LI resident now a Bubba and happy to be one.

adios, adieu, ciao
You know, I have been on other place sites (in this forum) because I am ALSO planning to move in the spring when I retire . And, so far this is the only one in which its own inhabitants speak so poorly of their area. As someone who was here fifty years ago when we still had beautiful farms & lovely little villages, that is so sad. I feel as though my own land has been hijacked.
