It's stunning that this forum would miss something like our finest Nassau and Suffolk County Police officers risked their lives to enter harms way in 3 active structural fires to carry unconscious victims out while disregarding their own safety. In a third incident they persuaded a victim to jump from the roof of her burning home and to safety.

The Nassau officer won the prestigious carnegie medal of heroism out of 80,000 candidates. 6 that received them had died.

God Bless these Hero's

Have a happy fourth because without hero's and Patriots we wouldn't be celebrating this weekend!

Many people go above and beyond their job description on a daily basis. These officers deserve recognition but it's not just county police that go above and beyond.

Yes, many people go above and beyond daily. But how many of them risk their lives in the process? That's the whole point of the recognition being discussed ... putting your life on the line when it's not required nor expected.

Nobody ever said it was just county police. The OP cited several examples of Nassau and Suffolk cops being recognized for going above and beyond. We should appreciate that they're willing to risk all for people they don't even know.

And they are well compensated for doing so.

Sorry, but the patrol cop is not trained to enter burning buildings without protective gear or breathing apparatus. Simply not part of the training now, or in the past. And no expectation on the part of the Department that the cop will undertake those actions. Period.

Because that is what courageous people do.

They absolutely could have waited for fire while those inside died.

But they didn't. They probably figured that their lives were just as important as those inside and took the risk.

People made of the kind of stuff that many of our emergency workers are made of are a special breed and I'm honored to have them looking out for our community.

It's fitting that on this forth of July weekend we are reminded of acts of patriotism and that patriots still walk amongst us.

Why did I say Patriots?

Because Patriots can come in many guises and do show themselves in our country often through different means. Selfless service, duty, loyalty, personal courage etc.

It's so obvious that even in this circumstance there would still be posts offering excuses or belittling the events. It amusing to the point of cowardice.

But no matter. The ones that appreciate it the most and know what kind of service they received were the family members that are together today that certainly wouldn't have been if it weren't for these acts of bravery.

The cop haters only look for the negative.

Why? Because they themselves have been locked up or their family members and they blame the police.

Or

They drink the fox news kool aide and blame public service workers for the economies problems which we're caused by corruption in the banking system and federal reserve cartel.
