The stretch from Moriches to Hampton Bays will give you some options - any of the small towns in between would be reasonable commute and the smaller bungalow type houses could be affordable depending exactly on location.

Take a look in Center/East Moriches where you can avoid the Mastique area and schools.

This time of year you won't find much that is close. Wait another 2 months, get a 6 month winter rental probably very close to where your job will be and spend those 6 months looking for something in your price range, you'll find something. Lots of people are leaving NY and are dropping their home prices out of desperation.

Thank you everyone! I need to do some research, I see. I appreciate the helpful replies.

Daveoliva - I'll have to rent for awhile, can't buy right now - but thank you so much.

Default A map of the Village of East Hampton in the Town of East Hampton, Suffolk County

Hevyn, bear in mind that it is important to know that there are 3 "East Hamptons" (from smallest to largest, in order of acreage):

1. There is the Village of East Hampton;

2. There is the "East Hampton, NY 11937" ZIP Code postal zone, and it includes the Village of East Hampton and all or parts of 5 hamlets within its service area; and,

3. There is the Town of East Hampton, and it includes 2 villages and 7 hamlets as well as the "East Hampton, NY 11937" ZIP Code postal zone and all or parts of 5 other ZIP Code postal zones, within its borders.

A map of the Village of East Hampton in the Town of East Hampton, Suffolk County:

As already pointed out, the Village of East Hampton has a different border than does the "East Hampton, NY 11937" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have an "East Hampton, NY 11937" mailing address and not be in the Village of East Hampton): places that have an "East Hampton, NY 11937" mailing address that are not in the Village of East Hampton are in the Hamlet of East Hampton North, the Hamlet of Northwest Harbor, the Hamlet of Wainscott, the Village of Sagaponack, the Hamlet of Amagansett and the Hamlet of Springs.

Hevyn, , you can find out in which community (city, village or CDP) that job is actually located, which is oftentimes different from the community named in that place's mailing address, by using the Census Bureau's online address search function. (CDP, or Census Designated Place, is the Census Bureau equivalent for a hamlet in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.)

Move to East Hampton, one of the unincorporated hamlets like Springs. The commute from Southampton town would be bad enough, but from Brookhaven, absolute hell. 4 lanes become 2 on 27 in the middle of Southampton Town and its a crawl along with every laborer and contractor in Suffolk County working on large residential construction projects in SH and EH.
I wish the train offered a solution but even if you were near the station at each end, the schedule is pretty limited.
From Moriches or Shirley areas you are talking easily 1.5 hours each way driving.
Dont know what the job is or pays and what your housing needs are, but commuting would ruin your life. If you can buy a modest house out there, the taxes will be a lot less than Brookhaven town and the Schools will be a bit better
Gas saved alone would make a huge difference in your budget.
