If you don't like them, just stick a HD antennae on your roof.
That's not quite the option on Long Island as it is in other places. You need a really good (read:expensive) antenna to get anything worth seeing at a quality that doesn't harken back to 1978.
I just got the letter in the mail today. As of Aug 30th no more signal without a box. I called and they said I will get up to 3 boxes at no charge for one year. SO I'll take that and after the year is up figure out what I have to cut out just to keep the cost the same, just like everything else these days

I guess it depends on your definiton of expensive. my antanna was about $75. the preamp and distributon amp were about another $100.
Depends on if you like network TV, I for the most part do, I get netflix etc, so I'm good, all for the cost of 3 months of service.
never been happier to have dish network. $35 a month gets me all the channels cablevisoin has including the locals.
way better customer service and product- and I have can have FOUR TVs hooked up for less than the price cablevision was charging me for two. Dish comes in an installs the stuff for free too.
They have these awesome DVR-boxes that control two TVs using wireless remotes. Less clutter, and you can swap shows between boxes.
If anyone is interested in making the switch. PM me, I can knock $50 off your first bill.

what do you do about internet? If you're paying $50 to someone for that, then it's nearly the same final cost. That's how the bundles get us.
I get my internet from Time Warner for $35 a month. Verizon sells DSL too for less than opt. online ala carte.
My total internet + tv bill is less than 70 a month for 4 rooms.
sounds good for a casual user (not being derogatory). I used to have DSL and it just doesn't cut it for me. Seems $50 is the minimum for 15mpbs+ down speeds around here.
Right now with FIOS triple play I'm doing only $70/month before taxes, but 1 room. 4 rooms would be another $15.
Do you have signal degradation during storms?
