Default Utility lines in backyard ?s

To what degree do utility lines affect the resale value of houses on Long Island? I didn't find much discussion on these lines in the forum, so perhaps most people don't mind them?

I'm also wondering if there's any safety concern. Google does point me to an article talking about low voltage lines and leukemia in kids, so I am a bit concerned.

They do seem somewhat common in backyards. Perhaps the only concern is that I probably couldn't put a pool in the backyard?

if there are utility lines, there is a property easement for them. The town can show you the easement location and give you the specs on whether you can build a pool.

You can put in a pool. If you are putting in an in ground pool the lines may need to be raised, we have many neighbors who have backyard pools and there is no problem. The same may well be true for an above ground pool but few folks get a permit for above ground pools whereas you have no choice if it is in the ground.

In this part of LI we have power lines above ground in other parts they are below. Choose your poison. In the winter, if the lines freeze and pull down they are easily accessible albeit exposed. IF below grade often times it takes longer to locate the problem, albeit it they are not exposed.

Is not the EMFs as much as the agent orange used to kill all the vegetation beneath and the fact that 50% of the buyers out there wont touch a house thats near the powerlines out of fear of Cancer.

I'm not sure you're talking about the same thing as Crooks. We had utility lines in the backyard when we lived in GC....that's where they are in Garden City, if you want to live there, for the most part you deal with the lines being in your backyard. I'm talking cable, phone - not high voltage lines attached to towers. Your utility lines are either in the front or the back, there is no escaping them (unless you live somewhere they are buried, but they are still there). Not sure how they impact having a pool.

They are not too nice to see all the time you look up so resale will be a factor for sure.

everyone is entitiled to their opinion.... but I disagree. I think they look better in the back yard where I can block things with evergreen plants, than have them strung across the front of my house.

I don't think either has an effect on resale as long as they're not any uglier than the next house

No effect on resale. There are many areas with backyard utility poles including alot of Stony Brook and it never has effected them.
