I did the long commute to and from the city and Dix Hills for a while. It was fine for me then but now that I'm married and planning to have kids I agree with you in trying to find a place closer to the city.

For what it's worth, I understand in trying to find a good diverst neighborhood. I went to Woodmere middle school where I was ony 1 of 2 black kids in the school. To say the least, it was a good school but socially I did not have a great experience there.

That is my biggest worry. I feel like being biracial is enough to deal with; I don't want to set my child(ren) up in a situation that can potentially be isolating. I know I cannot shield them from the world but I can go in eyes wide open.

It seems like Sea Cliff is a little more diverse in terms of having more Black residents. What about Roslyn or Manhasset? Roslyn Heights has a decent Black population and most kids go to Roslyn schools, with some parts being in other districts: Roslyn Heights

Greenvale is another community with a good sized Black population in that area: Greenvale, New York

Default In reality, none of these places are "bastions of diversity" with many people of color ...

Good catch with Greenvale, as I was looking at a school in that community and things didn't add up. I have to remember with LI, that communities that feed into a SD aren't as cut and dry like it usually is up here. With that said, I'd still say that parts of the Roslyn and Manhasset SD's would fit the OP's criteria.

Actually, now I'm confused about Greenlawn. Check this out: Greenvale CDP, New York - Fact Sheet - American FactFinder

Can it change THAT much in a decade? Also, that city-data information is from estimates, which have been shown at times to be way off.

City-data does it based on estimates. The official 2010 census has a map available here: 2010 Census Interactive Population Map

According to the census, the demographics of Greenvale were as follows:
Total population: 1,094
White: 763 (69.7%)
Black or African American: 21 (1.9%)
Asian: 206 (18.8%)
Native American: 3 (0.3%)
Some Other Race: 52 (4.8%)
Two or More Races: 49 (4.8%)

There were 149 Hispanics or Latinos of any race (13.6%)

Interesting...I wonder if they included parts of the CW Post campus or it's just that many Black residents left? There was a correction made in my area when a dorm from a campus was wrongly placed in a suburban town, when it should have been included into the city limits.
