Call it whatever you want. It's mostly ignorance.

Hey Legal you had me until you went with Stuyvesant. Unlike Long Island anyone is fee to go to any school in the 5 boroughs in nyc. When it comes to schools like the ones you mentioned you have to qualify via (extra curricular/grade point/test scores) so their draw does not even count. They draw students from all over the city some travel as far as 3 hrs. to get there. Name the best school district on the island and let me know where the high achieving students in Wyndance/CI/Brentwood and such can qualify to attend. I stand by my original statement, because unlike the city West Islip states are self-contained.

Of Blacks and Hispanics of course!

He's made a bunch of comments like this before. (For instance, this post. And then he mentioned something about "Whenever I see illegals, I beat them up" or something like that in another thread, and then there's a few other examples I don't recall off the top of my head) Whether he's just joking/trolling, or if he actually believes what he's saying, I don't know.

Amen. Nowadays if you move/live somewhere that has a low crime rate, and you're a white person, you're labeled a racist. Nevermind the fact that 99.5% of the people, black or white, feel much better walking down the streets of Patchogue or Bay Shore or Port Jefferson, than they do of Wyandanch or Gordon Heights. Has NOTHING to do with being "ignorant" but has EVERYTHING to do with being a realist. If you live in those areas, your chances of being involved in a burglary, robbery or violent crime go up big-time. People used to talk about minorities throwing out the "race card" Now it's white people who throw it out there. Get a clue.

Is long island racist? I'd say yes. Go drive through certain parts of Hempstead, (or Bwood for you suffolk county) and be white. You will get stared at, maybe cursed at. Who knows what'll happen to your car. Its dangerous. And why is it dangerous? Because you are white. And that in itself is racist.

Think im making this up? Ive had it happen to me by NCC in hempstead/uniondale area.

SamanthaDoll make sure you have your armored escort the next time you drive through there. I don't know about your experience but I have yet to see that in either neighborhood that you mentioned. Maybe someone foolish drunk person said something to you because you were staring but that's about it.

Oh Wyhdance as mentioned a few post above you is a bad area and a lot of people who live in Dix Hills drive through there every day heading to the Southern State and even worse park their 100k car at the Wyndance train station without incident.

I don't know if that's perceived or real but that's their feelings. They are looking for the same things for their kids and family so why not move to these areas if they provide all of that.
My cousin's community shifted greatly. Where his family was once one of the many white families in the area, by the time he graduated HS he was one of the few remaining white students. For that, he was hassled frequently. He could have bought the family house and remained, but it was made clear that he was no longer welcome in the town he was born and raised in.

It stinks when people of any color take an 'us vs. them' approach.

I chose my area because I liked the older houses, my husband grew up here, I attended SBU and knew that a fair number of SBU staff lived here. I've met many interesting people from all around the world as either neighbors or community members. On my small street we've had neighbors from Poland, Japan, China, Italy, France, and an Eastern European county whose name I am forgetting. One of my closest friends is British and, as a result of her connection to SBU, I've met incredibly intelligent and articulate individuals who unknowingly made me feel inferior with respect to academic achievement.

Was that their plan? Were they trying to make me feel unwelcome? Or is it something I perceived?

You see, it's not that we white folks are "racists", it's just that we were very confused and angry after the government took away our slaves. Wouldn't you be too? It's much easier to have slaves doing all your farming, cleaning and child rearing for you and we just couldn't deal with all that stress, so we lashed out against the dark skinned peoples. For a time, maybe there were some unkindly words and lewd behavior on display at our secret meetings in the woods, but that's all behind us now. Nowadays we have scouting services to go out into the minority neighborhoods to find clean, safe and un-rambunctious "hired help" for us at a nominal fee. This leaves our men enough time to concentrate on being effective captains of industry and our ladies, meanwhile, are free to indulge their every passing fancy as befits their social standing. The young ones just adore the joyous native song and dance of their minority handlers and everyone returns home at supper time smiling, while our beloved hired help bids us adieu and then falls asleep on the bus... dreaming of the jungle amidst the roar of a diesel engine and the wafting smell of hobo urine and vomit.
An amalgam of Gone With the Wind and The Help?

If you ever get the inkling you can watch this film on the integration of Shaker Heights, OH. This "exclusive" neighborhood desegregated but then the white residents formed a covenant to restrict any further sales to blacks, thus preventing white flight. So it's a Catch-22; they maintained the economic integrity of their neighborhood but prevented additional minorities (blacks) from benefiting. The case you are describing is the norm. A few blacks move in. At 20% black population, "white flight" is triggered. There is ALWAYS a much larger white population than black population so when almost all of the whites move out of a neighborhood, there is NEVER enough middle class blacks to take their place and fill the void. As a result, property owners who hold out have no one to sell to and end up renting their properties to low income blacks as certainly no one else will rent or buy in the neighborhood. The higher income blacks that first moved into the neighborhood and can afford to do so then move to the new predominately-white neighborhood and the cycle starts all over again.
Why is it that there "is NEVER enough middle class blacks to take their place and fill the void"? We see plenty of EOP programs on college campuses, minority-based organizations to help wayward black youth get on the success track. There are politicians, physicians, scientists, astronauts, teachers -- and even a President who self-identifies as a black man. There are plenty of great role models to emulate.

We can point and say this town is segregated or that person is racist, but how can we expect to gain enough middle class blacks to take the place of the departing upper class blacks when the lower class remains entrenched in poverty either by lifestyle or bad decisions? When a young man sees a rap star who made it big, or decides to go for what appears to be easy money doing something nefarious, that white picket fence in front of a vanilla, cookie-cutter middle class suburban home isn't going to cut it.
