I have been driving down to South Carolina (Myrtle Beach area) since 2007. At times I even thought about relocating there (probably never will). But what I don't understand is where LIer's go when they move off. I personally love Long Island more and more when I travel out of state. LI can definitely use some updating. But when I was in North Carolina we were driving off backroads and you can really see that most are hurting from the economic crisis.
On Long Island towns are built right on top each other. You rarely see space between towns. Out of state you can drive for miles before hitting another town. So when people from NY say there moving to the Carolinas and Florida where are they moving to thats so similar to LI?
I know this is really random but its been on my mind.
I know 3 people in my immediate ccircle of friends that moved out of NYC. 1 moved to the Catskills region upstate (a town called Palenville) and comes down to visit friends and distant family every few months or so.
Another friend moved to the outskirts of Raleigh, NC (formerly in Seaford) but only because she was pregnant with her 3rd child and their salaries couldn't stretch enough to cover buying a home, car, cost of living, etc.
Another one I've known since high school moved to Florida after college, got married, then moved to East Stroudsburg, PA where she worked for a large oil company in PA until they went out of business. She then landed a job in NYC and was commuting into NYC until her divorce became final and the house got sold. She just moved back to Queens to live with her mom rent-free for an easier commute.
I have also heard stories from my husband and his friends of people who LEFT NYC only to come back years later for different reasons (one left FL right after she retired because the hurricanes wiped out half their vacation home twice).
I will be moving down to an over 55 community in florida when I retire...to drink beer, pop viagra and pick up older ladies in orange hair....probably, former C-D'ers from Long Island.

I even heard of stories of people trying to get back to LI because they didn't like where they moved too. Then it can be too hard to come back. I'm becoming a teacher and know it will be almost impossible to find a job on Long Island. I may have to move off, not that I want to.
Agreed about moving back to LI after somewhere else...can be done but you scratch your head wondering why a little cape or 3 bedroom ranch has an $850 a month tax bill and where you came from you paid $2k a year in taxes. We moved to CT in 2004 from Suffolk County, and know CT is getting more expensive and tax happy, but not like Long Island. No way are we buying something with an 8-10k tax bill. On another thread someone wrote something like "I only pay $7k for my taxes in Huntington". And there is the problem, when someone thinks "only 7k" is a good deal.
A lot of my high school graduating class are no longer on the island most that left are scattered on the eastern seaboard. I went to college in Florida, with many fellow LI'ers, I think all but one never came back and settled on the island. I do love Long Island, it made me who I am but boy is it expensive. Wecare thinking DE, eastern PA, MD or poss VA next, maybe even Southern Jersey depending on taxes. LI is just ridiculous
