Thinking of moving to Wading River, Long Island..advice??
I live in Massapequa, Long Island now and am happy here except the house is too small for my growing family... will be 4 kids soon ages 12,11,7,and one on the way.... we only have 3 bedrooms ..we are thinking of moving out further on the island and have found wading river nice (shorum-wading river school district)and we wanted a bigger house with more land..... Is there any reason not to move out there...my husbands job is in suffolk... how is the drinking water ...what is the difference in water quality between a house with public water, cesspool, or well water....i have seen houses out there with different kinds..is one better over the others.....is there anything about that area that i should avoid it??? (health issues, crime, etc)...I dont want to make a mistake by moving out there...thanks...carol (ps..we have concidered putting an addition on the house, but have found that it is SOOOOOOO expensive to do that and figured instead of putting the money in this house, we could buy out there and get more land and more house) thanks again

Yeah - the advice I have is to do it. It is wonderful out there. Only 1 form of shopping which is King Kullen, but you do have wonderful shopping in the surrounding towns. i.e. wadeing river ansd you are close to Riverhead for the outlets and are at the gateway for a ride to the Hamptons. I live out east and love it - wouldn't trade it for the world. Only reason I am leaving is because I cannot afford it any longer.
YOU WON'T BE SORRY

Wading River is a very nice area. There are a lot of new houses going up and still a lot of land. The school district is pretty good. I don't have any information about the drinking water.
The shoreham nuclear power plant is not in operation. I don't know if it will ever be but you might want to find out more about that. I guess all of us on LI should be concerned about that!

Shoreham will never be used, that's why we pay an adjustment on our LIPA bills. Shoreham-Wading River School District lived high on the hog for MANY years based on what LILCO was paying in taxes. However, a court found that LILCO (now LIPA) was due a refund of their taxes as Shoreham was never allowed to operate. On the back of your LIPA bill is the Suffolk County Tax adjustment which is"The amount collected by LIPA from Suffolk County customers representing the overpayment of property taxes to the Shoreham taxing jurisdictions". Now the district is short loads of cash and the local property owners are paying big bucks for all the extra bells and whistles the district previously sucked out of LIPA.

I live on the Wading River Border in Ridge. I LOVE it here, my DH is from Valley Stream & he thinks its like living in the country. I work in massapequa, it takes one hour to get there. SWR schools are very good, but as mentioned the taxes are $$$ & won't be going down. However you get alot of land & house for the money.
The shopping is great, the people are NICE, the pace is slower, the scenery is beautiful. We just love it. I think you're making a great choice.

Most areas of Wading River should be served by the Suffolk County Water Authority. SCWA water always rates high in surveys. If it's available, the house you buy would probably be hooked up already. If well water were needed, you would probably need a deep well due to the north shore location (hills, have to drill farther to reach water table). SCWA is the way to go though (safe & clean, regularly tested water, good water pressure, fire hydrants nearby).

Here's the real deal w/the well water in this area. If you are south of 25A & east of Willam Floyd in wading river then you are living IN the Pine Barrens. This is where 90% of LI's drinking water comes from these days. I have a deep water well & although my water is "hard" I get it tested yearly & its perfect & delicious. SCWA has hookups in the street in my neighborhood now, we will hook up someday if our well fails. We also have a cesspool, no public sewer system in my area.

Wading River is really nice. We have friends that live there and eventhough we live in Medford, they live in the country, but they have lots of neighbours.
It is nice, you can get more land and more hosue for your money.
