Maybe police salaries should be the measuring stick/payscale for an average Middle Class job here?

(Can ya hear me Cablevision/CA/Newsday/Pall/Steve Levy/Tom Suozzi?)

"Will it pay as much as a cop Mr Employer?...otherwise I cant live here"

Perhaps these are the discussions that need to occur when our kids graduate college and enter the workforce?

Just a thought.

Yeah, I recently got screened out of consideration for a job because I asked for 80% of what I was getting at my last job. I thought I was lowballing, too.

Who's taking these jobs? People who are still living with their parents?

They are not overpaid at all. In comparing there salaries to the NYPD, it would appear that LI cops are overpaid. In reality, it's just that the NYPD is WAY underpaid.

Regardless of your opinions on what off duty cops do, it comes down to what they do when they are working. Can anyone dispute that the police in Nassau and Suffolk have pretty much kept a lid on crime? While the NYC Police were pushing the criminals out of NYC these bad guys tried to set up shop on LI and I think the PD did a decent job of stifling them. Take a look at many areas in NJ & PA that have seen large increase in crime as a result.

When I lived in Long Beach, I saw the police on patrol regularly and the few times that I called for them, they were there in only a few minutes and took proper action.

The increased salary guarantees the most qualified pool of candidates. While LI departments can still hire the best recruits because of the salary, you will see the difference in NYC because of the deplorable pay scale.

Yes, they do a good job. However, the current demographics of LI might have something to do with the lower crime rate. As the area changes and becomes less segregated, it will be interesting to see what happens to the crime rate.

fifteen years ago, you didnt hear people complaining about nass/suff police pay. Now that they are breaking the 100g mark all of a sudden this is a problem. Bottom line, take the test or stop complaianing.

And you poor b******s are paying double...for State Police AND County Police! I rarely see a state police presence down there...but you're paying for them at the same rate of all the other NY State residents.
