I work literally 10 mins from where I live now and that is going locally..and that 10 mins include walking through the door and walk up the stairs to my building.
Now I am looking around for house and it seems 30 mins is an eternity.
I remember traveling 45 mins to work for 3 years and it didnt bother me.
Has anyone gone through this?
Hell, when I used to work in the city, it took me an hour and a half to and from work, which includes: walking to the bus, jumping on the train, then walking to my building.
I live in Islip and commuted to hempstead everyday for 8 years. 40-45 min commute depending on traffic. If the job is worth the trip go for it. 30 minutes is really not that big of a deal.
I commute from Wantagh to oyster bay, and it's about 30 minutes. By long island standards, 30 is pretty good. I think it depends on where you are driving. I am lucky in that it's pretty direct - straight up and down.
I lived a few blocks away from my office a few years back, then moved 30 minutes away. I am glad I am not living so close... any time there was an issue, I was called in since they knew I was so close.
I took the LIRR-Ronkonkoma to Flatbush Ave-Bklyn. Left my house at 6:30 am, walked in my door at 7:45 PM
I will NEVER DO THAT AGIAN!!!!!!!! I do not care how much you paid me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After 6 years, I finally got a transfer, 10 min from home! I go home for lunch.
I finally got my life back! The real question is: "what is your time worth".
I commuted from Sound Beach to Brookhaven Lab (11 min)
Now I drive to from SB to LI Macarthur (30-35 min). By most standards a half hour commute isn't bad, but it still sucks. I use 3X the amount of gas and have to deal with the "white van brigade" at 7am.
I think of it as more of a consideration than a show-stopper in moving (or changing jobs like I did).
I would probably be doing this commute for the next 25 years. Maybe atleast 10.
I'm wondering if it becomes a routine if it would that bad since I would probably get used to it.
So when I hear guys travel 2 hours. Imagine it tak these people 6 hours just for traveling and getting ready for work.
