Excellent question. The school board needs to be dismantled.

It's all about $$$. Most school districts IMHO are corrupt and need to be examined. (about a year ago they were all freaking out because a few of the bad apples got caught and tightened up their practices).
If your child has any problems, they berate the parents like THEY are naughty until they classify the kid 'special ed.' Then the school district gets money per special ed kid and no one hassles Mom because Jimmy can't or won't do the work--he has 'issues' they will work on..Now it's okay if Jimmy can't do his times tables.
I know because I am a ex-teacher and a mother of a child in special ed.
We need educational reform.
I can't wait to move and see how they handle these things in another state.

Test scores do not tell the entir story. You can't always trust them. If 50% of the children do not speak english and parent do not speak english then a lot of hard work goes into helping those student- good quality teaching. Those children learn and grow bit when its all averaged up the scores are going to look lower. Does this mean that the kids are dumb and the teachers did nothing? NO. Most research shows that high school performance is correlated with the parent's education and expectation. Districts with higher educated wealthy parent shold perform better because of opportunity and those children come to school prepared to learn. There is a gap in scores and I think the schools are working on it but its not easy.
My niece goes to schho in Central islip and she is doing very well. She is exposed to a lot of new things and cultural stuff that makes her more well rounded. She is in the honor society and many companies have contacted her to participate in all types of great programs. If you keep after your children and they are smart they will do well.

I think that these kids are zoned for CI which is frightening,

CI has a very savy local teachers union. Also, who would go there if they did not pay well?

I think the teachers go there because they want to make a difference. My experience with teachers in CI and Brentwood has been very positive. (I don't know much about Wyandanch. ) They buy supplies, donate clothes, food, etc and work very hard. That savvy teachers union also helped a needy family with funeral costs when they lost their small child I heard. These teachers go above and beyond. It can't be an easy job. I think they work very hard for whatever they get paid. My kids did much better there than when we lived in a more affluent area in Nassau Co. Parents have to do their part also. There are so many things that affect the schools....for example....how about the problem of several unrelated families living in a single family home? It is really bad in CI and Brentwood....it has to have a big impact on the schools since they are not all paying taxes to contribute to the community.
