The notion that appraisal shopping is "okay" has long been engrained into the public psyche by those in the housing sales business. It's not ok, it's illegal and people are going to jail for it.

Relax...I wasn't shopping for anything. I just needed to know if things like fixing a torn screen or painting my deck would do any good.
