considering getting a security system installed with Slomin's. It's a 5-year contract . I'll read the fine print but would appreciate if anyone would post their past experiences with the company - good, bad and ugly ... thanks !
check out banner alarm on broadway in massapequa. small family company that has excellent service. and monthly monitoring is about half the cost of an ADT.
We had Solmins for 10 years while we are living in our NY apartment. Never any problems. Just a pain when the batteries started dying after 5 years and needed replacing. The tech person never showed us how to open the little boxes attached to our windows. Even calling they could not help us. We ended up figuring it out but it would have been helpful if they showed us from the start or even had a diagram in the owners manual. I would suggest getting a service contract after the initial one expires. We cancelled after 10 years as we moved to Florida and Slomins does not service here. PM me if you have any other questions.
Contact your homeowner's insurance company and see what discounts they offer, and if they have a relationship with any particular company. My carrier gives me a $40/month break if I use ADT which basically means the system is free (I pay a little extra for a cellular connection, however).
For the last 9 years, been using a company including central station for only $14/mo. No contract required. They do the equipment install (additional cost of course) as well. Works the same as ADT would (if alarm rings, central calls you and then the cops if the passwd is wrong or nobody answers) - so I'm not sure why the premium on other services. Message me if you want the contact info.
Slomin's guy who came to my house wasted my time. Wouldn't answer any questions about cost of extras that I wanted added to the basic system they offered. He did offer a discount on fuel oil if I signed up for the alarm.
We wound up going with Brinks which is now part of ADT. A company called Eye On Alarm did the install. We were very happy with their work and with the system. For a couple extra bucks a month we get a service contract which covers all labor for repairs or system upgrades/additions. We only pay for material.
Had them for 10 years and paying I believe $75 or so every quarter. The monitoring service seems reliable as I had a break in last year, and they were able to tell me which sensor was tripped with the full audit trail. Aside from the alarm having a continual beep (which you have to manually clear) every time the power goes out more than 5 seconds (or you temporarily lose phone/VOIP connectivity), it's a pretty good product.
Do you homework.
By the time the "bad guys" break in, steal your stuff and leave the cops will just be getting there.
You can find a DIY alarm for a cheaper service.
I am NEVER dealing with slomins again.
