Have you thought about Bucks or Chester County in PA? We had thought about going there before we moved to NC (the rest of my family had left for NC)....both are pretty easy commutes to NY if you want to see family and friends, easy enough to get to NYC if you want that.
BigMike is right though - some people just move and move and are never happy. You and wife need to come to a consensus and find a place and stick with it. No sense being unhappy where you live. Many people labor under the delusion that they are "missing something" by not living in (fill in the blank). Chances are you aren't really missing anything but if you miss your family that can't be replaced.

ill do my best to explain it, my sundays in LI were walking to a diner 2 blocks away with the family or ride my bike with my family or kids, there's a park behind my our old house which i would also go when the weather is good and run after Mr softee truck with my daughter, and thats only a few things... sorry i guess nothing to do are poor choices or word cause you can do that here in NC except chase after Mr softee and actually walk 2 blocks away to a diner, its more the feel and vive and the LI and family around you.... its more the feel, the people, easy access to things...

Why would anyone miss LI?
Too many earthquakes and hurricanes here.
Try California, or Florida.

I just want to say that I'm born and raised in Miami and when I moved to NY, I also joined LA Fitness. I LOVED that gym and fell in love with the area instantly as well.
I guess it reminds me of the lifestyle in Florida (Miami), so that's why I liked it. Plus, it's close to Mineola/Garden City, which is pretty busy.
I hear ya!!! I'm only 29 and my husband and I don't have kids like you all, but I can understand. The south can really make you feel alone b/c it's so slow. I would say hang in there. That's a big move to make with all of those kids.
BUT, you only live once. Start looking for jobs and see what you find. I'm looking to GET OUT of Manhattan and work in Long Island. I've applied to many, many jobs and have only had one reply. So, you may miss L.I., but the opportunity to get you there may or may not be available. See what happens. I wish the best of luck to you. For us non-native L.I.-ers, I love L.I.! It's a happy medium, I think

Florida? Too hot, too humid, too slow....
I take it you're from L.I. Well, I'm from FL (Miami, at that). Grass is always greener

Can you see the grass from all the way up there?

Let's start with the fact that LI (particularly Nassau County) is a place where people actually walk on a sidewalk...rather than just pulling into there garage and walking directly into their house. I don't mean this as negatively as it sounds, but I feel like in most of America, folks live in a series of side-by-side prisons...
I mean the list of things you miss when you move can go on and on :
Change of seasons
Jewish High Holy Days
Evening walks (see above)
Sunday morning bagels
Corner delis
Being able to go to Manhattan
Real Chinese food and pizza
Pizza by the slice
Bazaars and street festivals
The NYC personality (see nycguy's posts)
Ice Cream Man (see nycguy's posts)
Sitting in front of your house (More of a Queens thing but happens in parts of Nassau too)
Christmastime in NY
Summertime from School being late June-early Sept rather than May to early August
Your family and grandma's "old neighborhood" (if you don't still live there)
Mets-Yankees Subway Series (Go Mets )
Being exposed to a variety of new immigrant cultures, rather than just one or two
Teachers and Civil Servants are paid well (for good or bad)
Unionized careers are still a possibility (ditto)
Small neighborhood parks and playgrounds
Old fashioned beach clubs with cabanas
Kids going door to door to shovel snow for you
One person is expected to physically pay when you go out to eat rather than waitress offering "separate checks"
Going out to eat at non-chain restaurants
Ok, maybe too much food there, but what's a bigger part of life, lol. But, I could go on. I realize that many don't like NY and there's a lot to like about the high quality of life in Exurban America that I perhaps unfairly described as a "prison." But, even if you don't live in Manhattan and go to an art gallery every weekend, there's a feeling and lifestyle you get in NYC/Long Island that you can't get anywhere else....
