Port Washington seems to attract lots of young families. The PW train line has the best and easiest commute, and the town is extremely family oriented, with lots of activities geared for babies and children. There's a great library, and a fantastic community center. Nice parks. Big on sports. The feeling of community here is very strong.

Yes, the library and community center appear to be quite impressive. PW is mostly nice, I just hope the small amount of not so nice doesn't poison the rest. That's the case with all of LI, really. I'm just happy, and hopeful, that Hempstead doesn't ruin GC. So far, so good.

Default Young people on LI

It seems Ronkonkoma is becoming a hot spot for young people to live. Taxes aren't to bad. What am I talking about. Taxes anywhere on LI is high.

GCGuy--It will take a lot for Hempstead to infiltrate Garden City. I grew up in Garden City (Garden Street, then the Mott Section) and it's still exactly the same. I'm 32, so it's a decent amount of time. Similar amount of people of color (or the lack thereof), very similar atmosphere and culture. The thing I hear complained about is the more "noveau riche" atmosphere (not my words), lots of label flaunting, more ostentatious etc. I think in my day it was more of an old school, preppy, drive a jalopy, but have millions in the bank kinda thing. Low key. Everyone shopped at Marshall's no matter how rich they were. And it is a little more diverse than people give it credit for. It's not all super-rich. There were (and are still) a lot of folks who work very hard to live in that community. Most people are genuinely nice, and it doesn't have quite the crazy, pressure cooker atmosphere of say, a Jericho, despite excellent schools. I mocked it all through growing up, but it's an excellent place to raise a family.

Make sure to go to the library!!

The problems with Hempstead are nothing new; the place has been pretty bad for decades. That's the thing with Garden City that's a bit unsettling; its proximity to Hempstead, and other towns nearby that are becoming a bit borderline.

But considering how many years things have been the way they are, GC has remained every bit as desirable as it has always been. And that's more than a good sign.

I know what you mean...it's still very much low key and preppy. I like the atmosphere of the place very much. It's different than a lot of towns...more "New Englandy" really. We live just north of Mott (gorgeous area, too much money for what you get). I really enjoy it. Kids playing, people jogging, dogs walking (with owners, not rabid). Most people are genuinely nice, too. The best part is that people move to other houses w/in the village and there are still alot of people that grew up here and bought a house to start a family (like our neighbors).

Nice insight, thanks.

A lot of GC people return. I'm seeing a more and more former classmates signing up their little ones for storytime. I think it's just a very comfortable area, when you get used to it. There are few communties on LI that are similar (RVC? Manhasset? Although those two have changed more over the years, I think. I know I've had an impossible time finding something less expensive, but with a similar feel. And yes it's still very preppy. Now, I find myself appreciating the timelessness of it all. KWIM?

A good portion of young people seem to be moving off Long Island. Sadly I wish I could follow. But my wife is close to her family and they all live here. Don't get me wrong, I grew up here. And I would miss it. But the goal is to find a job that is similar in salary, and walk away from NY bills.
