Is it allowed in Suffolk?
I tried to research this in NYS and it looks like large brush burning isn't allowed, but having a campfire is fine as long as the wood doesn't contain chemicals.

Depends on how tight you roll them. I usually sift them out...

We have a good size firepit and occasionally burn the brush. Make sure there's no poison ivy whatsoever in it. I haven't had a problem doing this, my neighbors have been pretty good about it -- but then I'm not spending an entire day burning stuff, either.
Today I purcahsed a fire pit and told the guy at the store that I need to burn a zillion branches and twigs from the storm and he told me that was illegal. I asked him what people are supposed to burn (isn't all wood equal?) and he said they have to use the wood that you buy from the stores. I think he was confusing branches with leaves, which I know is illegal in NYS. It just didn't sound right.
My fire pit is made of stone and dug into the earth -- it is 3' deep and about 4' across. We can put quite a bit into it. Be careful with the pit you purchased at the store. Some of the metal ones can not take prolonged high heat.
We use the fire pit 2x a week all summer and fall. Just do it and be safe about it.
