Default Commute from Long Island towns to Astoria?

Looking at a possible transfer to Astoria, NY. Job would be near bridge to Rikers. How long of a commute do guys think it would be from say Farmingdale, Great Neck, and West Hempstead.

Just looking for a range for each town. Never been to NY and dotn know much about it so all help appreciated.

Thanks.

I want to say 15-20 minutes WITHOUT traffic. Then again I don't live in NY I just go to school on LI. I'd say 30 minutes because when I used to go from Queens to LI that's how long it would take 15-30.

Farmingdale is right on the Nassau-Suffolk border. Great Neck, Nassau-Queens border (North Shore), West Hempstead is more western Nassau also, further south than GN. So Farmingdale would be furthest. Can't help you with Astoria, though. Sorry.

Ideally, with no traffic:

Great Neck = 15 minutes, quick ride on the Grand Central Pkwy.
Farmingdale = 25 -30
West Hempstead = 20-25

Problem is that the Grand Central backs up terribly around LGA airport, city line and Shea stadium (on game days).... add up to 30 minutes to all times for any of the above situations delays.

In terms of affordability we can play the old Sesame Street song...One of these things is not like the others!

If you can afford the prices of Great Neck, why would you bother to look at the other areas? THey aren't bad per se, but definitely not in the same league economically.

I worked just west of Stienway and Broadway (TV Studio) I lived in Manhasset 15-20 minutes in the morning **after the rush hours**
Rikers (Marine Air terminal exit) is even closer.

PS if your going to shell out $$$ to live in Great Neck (New Iran) you may as well live in Queens and save your $$ (especially if your not Jewish)
North Shore LIJ Hospital system and the GN natives destroyed TNH township.

Default OK Guys

I am just a poor southern boy from Baton Rouge, LA. I know NOTHING about anything to do with NYC. Potential boss just said with your family (wife and 2 girls 4 and 1) Long Island would be a good place for you to live during the project.

So any suggestions are appreciated. I picked those towns because I saw houses for rent on craigslist and they were pretty close to where the project is.

We will be renting and looking to pay up to $3500 or so for a nice house, 4br at least 2 bath. Pool would be great but not a necessity. May go higher for the right house. Main thing is I want a nice yard and area for my kids to play. Thats why I am not looking for apartments or in the city. The living allowance on this project is going to be very generous. I could never pay that kind of rent without it. But I want a nice place for the wife and kids so....

Again any help us greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I would be leaving home to drive to work around 6AM, and leaving work to come home around 530PM. What does that do to the times above? Especially on the way home?

At that time Id budget up to Farmingdale 75 min/W Hempstead 60 Min/Great Neck 40 Min
w no flooding on the GCP and no accidents.
Thats the thick of rush hour.
530 will be agony....Look in Bayside Queens too.
Astorias kinda cool too....safe.Close to NYC.

You in luck-there are so many wonderful places to live. Great Neck has a lot of persian people-get it right-not Iranian. You should come a take a look at Queens-Bellerose, Bayside, Glen Oaks. Most of Western Nassau is nice. If a place is questionable you will be able to tell just by looking at a place but all the town you mentioned are good. Valley Stram,Lybrook, Elmont and Maverne are also close to Queens. Get a Nassua County map-visit those places.
