where do you like to stay in the east end? We're thinking of a weekend getaway near montauk, hamptons, etc. Any recommendations? I've only visited there for the day and never stayed overnight so any recommendations/advice are welcome!

If you want to do the South Fork / Hamptons and Montauk scene then as lubby mentioned above Gurney's Inn/Spa out in Montauk.
If you would like to do the North Fork scene....vineyards, farms, farms stands, seaport villages etc then I would recommend staying in the brand spanking new gorgeous Hyatt Place that recently opened in Riverhead.
With the new Hyatt which is right on Main Street ( Rt 25 ) in Riverhead with the back facing a pool and the Peconic River, Riverhead is now becoming the stay place for many who not only wish to visit the North Fork but also the South Fork...that is because of Riverheads location which is right smack center of both forks.....while main street Riverhead has been struggling for many years and is nothing to write home about they are trying to make a come back and on Thursday evenings there is a free custom car show in the parking lot directly on the Peconic River..there also is a very nice riverfront boardwalk along the river and it is within a minute or two walking distance from the new Hyatt.
Another plus to staying at the new Hyatt is it is attached to the very famous east end attraction The Long Island Aquarium and Exhibit..( formely known as Atlantis Marine )......also if you like steak or want to have a few cocktails at a small and cozy bar you can walk out the door of the Hyatt lobby, walk west on the sidewalk and within a couple of mintues you will be at Cliff's Rendezvous ( same side of the street )....famous for the very own marinated Porterhouse Steaks....
And if you do visit the north fork those same steaks and drinks can be had at their other locations and names with the main one being The Elbow Room on Main Road in Jamesport...these are small places ( elbow room ..hehe ) but worth the wait if you like steak.
Finally, if you stay in Riverhead or even if you stay out in Montauk you must, must, must drive over to Sound Ave in Riverhead and pick up a pie or two from Briermere Farms where they make their own mouth-watering one of a kind pies and they also have all kinds of fresh, fresh locally grown produce and veggies out in front of the place......Everything they sell is just picked fresh and out of this world and all delivered or picked up daily from local farmers..( I know cause my boyfriend is one of them ) in addition to all the things they grown themselves which is alot.
If you like Apple Pie, get at least one of them.....omg they are so fresh and delicious..
On the south fork, Montauk is great for a getaway and Montauk Manor is a beautiful place to stay year round. The rooms are actually apartments with full kitchens and the place is immaculate. We have stayed there many times. In summer weather we like Ocean Beach in Montauk which is right on the ocean and you are able to walk to town (couple of blocks) to shops, restaurants, etc.
On the North Fork, there are many bed & breakfasts and new hotels in Riverhead. There are over 50 wineries to visit, farm stands and wonderful restaurants. Visit Greenport to shop and sightsee. There is a carousel for children, many boat trips available and great restaurants also.

When are you taking this weekend getaway? The north fork everything is booked pretty much till end of october. The bed and breakfasts on the north fork after october get really cheap . The hyatt in riverhead was booked through midway or so in october. I was able to get a room there the last weekend in oct.
You might have better luck in a hotel on the south fork because right when the hamptons dies down the north fork gets real busy.

You're absolutely right about everything being booked up so we probably won't be doing this weekend getaway this year. Note to self, have to book early next year!! Out of all the suggestions, the hyatt looked the best... maybe someone will cancel?
