Sadly I doubt anything will change as long as Obama is in the White House and his minions keep forcing the state and local governments to give them handouts, driver's licenses, benefits, and ignore their illegal status.

I would also allow people to opt out of Social Security and invest that money in a private account like what Bush the 2nd proposed.
Well said Wish.

Our biggest problem right now concerning our budgetary woes is the welfare system and Illegal Aliens bludgeoning the system because politicians are too scared to take a stand for a few reasons...

.Illegals are becoming a powerful electorate lobby...yep sad to say

.Believe it or not Government like welfare systems that make people dependant...And if you can get them off their couches to vote IE: buses, rides, vans, etc..they are a strong vote.

. Social Security is like a Ponzi scheme. Private investmant of those funds could be better served for retirement.

I look at all the candidates and see the same ole, same ole. The question is who is the lesser of the two dummies.

Welfare reform and immigration is the big gorilla in the room who nobody wants to tackle.

Right on, the Democrats have basically turned certain groups into slaves of the government. They have made them so dependent on the government that they cannot think for themselves, they have been brainwashed to believe that only the Democrats will "help" them (yeah, they will ... but for their own gain). It's sad, it really is. This is why we saw people saying things like "Obama gonna pay my car loans!", "Obama gonna pay for my college education!", and "Obama gonna pay my mortgage!" during the lead up to his 2009 inauguration.

The Democrats won't tackle immigration/border security because they want the Hispanic vote, the Republicans won't touch the issue either because they want cheap labor for their big business donors. We need a 3rd party that will put Americans, the United States, and our national security before all else.

Is this a thread about national issues now? Because public sector unions and illegals are a drop in the bucket compared to historically low tax rates on the top 1%, corporate tax avoidance, wasteful military spending, and out-of-control healthcare costs.

On a large scale perhaps

But Suffolk county has a large welfare expense and Illegal Aliens and the rapidly growing recipients of tax payer hand outs are out of control.
I'm sure we can go on all day about what all the problems are but most of us are workers no matter what sector we are employed by.

The problem comes from the slackers that are abusing the system watching the gainfully employed point fingers at each other.

My vote goes to the person who takes them on.

Yep sounds harsh but those are where the real problems lie. You can't live on Long Island and expect hand outs.

The 3 largest items on the budget are: employee benefits, "public safety" ie police, and "economic assistance" ie mostly federal mandated programs.

Your approach only touches one of the 3 items, and that is the one the county executive can have least effect on.

My vote goes to the person who isn't a shill for the 2500 guys taking the most out of the taxpayer wallets per capita. The gravy train needs to be derailed. If that means I vote against my registered party, so be it.

Yeah it is too bad it isn't politically correct to take on the group most responsible for causing this mess. They pay no taxes yet reap the most rewards. My beef is with those slackers. Decent Americans are taught that hard work is what keeps the economy afloat. These deadbeats bring it down.

I doubt at this point we can ever eliminate it.

Agreed, as I said before this is why I am voting for Angie. Bellone's biggest chunk of donations came from the SCPD PBA.

Well, apparently some people hear only what they want to. I guess you are okay with one small group of individuals making out like bandits while you try to divert attention away from them by blaming the welfare boogieman for all of our ills. What a joke.
