Interesting, if somewhat dated, doument that supports WIHS2006's comment.

I wish I could recall where I had read that LI receives back 46 cents for every $1. sent to Albany. If that's true, something really needs to be done.

Ive heard that as well. I think it might have been in Mangano's statehood study speech.

Long Island has always been short shafted by Albany. New York state politics revolve around the city and upstate ... Long Island not included - another reason why we should move towards statehood. But then we will still have to deal with federal taxes ... then we can move towards independence; if the NAU and the common passport ever come to fruition then I don't see why it would be such a bad idea actually. Of course that is another topic for 20-30 years down the road.

Area codes would probably remain the same. Manhattan (New York County) for instance has over 20 zip codes.

...to help the rest of the state be more economically independent.

But we're a state; not just a collection of competing counties. We help each other regardless of who's giving and who's getting. Tables can turn.

No, Suffolk should not assume Nassau's fiscal problems. Let Nassau merge with Kings and Queens County, and let Suffolk expand out to Montauk. After that, let Long Island become the 51st state.

Can someone explain to me why Nassau is such a complete failure considering the amount of taxes they impose on such miniscule lots?

I don't get it. Did Suozzi do it?

I thought Bridge and Tunnel LI was supposed to be our economic sweet spot?
