Ha, Long Island has the culture of a wet paper towel.
It's a novel idea but next to impossible. We can't even get 2 failing school districts to merge, let alone 2 counties.
It's the other "C" word...consolidation. Makes politicians cringe.
Like you said we cannot get two failing school districts to merge much less the rest of LI. It will happen when we are all dead and gone. This is the funniest idea I have heard in a while.
Never, ever gonna happen. LI state is more likely, and that too will never happen. Politicians like power and money, and will stop at nothing to retain what they have. Basically, things will never change dramatically, at least not in the people's favor. It will always be a political control pissing match until the end of time.
of course this should happen. Same with merging school districts, sanitation districts, sewer districts....not to mention Metro-North and LIRR, the TBTA and Port Authority, and so on and so forth.
Never gonna happen, but it's nice to dream.
If Nassau could accomplish consolidating some of it's overlapping special interest districts, maybe it could get back on the right track as well as show other counties consolidation can be done.
It will never happen in my life time or any other for that matter. I think for the sheer entertainment value of watching an old fashion joust, Levy vs. Mangano, each with their own legislators, trying to save their own skins, now that, would be worth the price of admission.
Are you guys done with your Suffolkian circle jerk yet?
LOL, as if Suffolk (or NYC) is in any better shape than Nassau. ALL counties have similar fiscal issues and both Nass/Suff are laying off 700; Nassau's adding more cuts to balance since NIFA won't allow borrowed $ to count as revenue anymore...lucky for Suffolk there is no SIFA ...yet.
Suffolk's mediocre schools would drag down Nassau too. Forget that. Especially after the Cuomo cuts ravage Suffolk SDs> NYS School Aid Cuts by District (LI)
Why woud consolidating government be a bad thing? Are Nassau and Suffolk so different that they require entirely different legislatures, county executives, public works administrations, etc. along with all the jobs, pensions and waste that comes along with it?
I've made this same point in several other threads - this isn't the 1920s. We're not a bunch of rural communities surrounded by farmland. There's no need for 100+ school districts, water districts, fire departments, etc. It's wasteful and one of the main reasons for our insane property taxes. If NYC can do it with a far larger population, we can do it on the Island.
